The city of San Francisco has sued the city of Oakland, claiming that plans to rename the airport would infringe on its trademark and \u201ccause confusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu filed a federal lawsuit<\/u><\/a> Thursday after the Port of Oakland Board of Commissioners approved a plan<\/u><\/a> to rename the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The lawsuit argues that the Oakland airport hopes to \u201cincrease passengers and profit by rushing to unlawfully incorporate\u201d San Francisco Airports \u201cSFO\u201d trademarked name into its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The plan, Chiu argues, ignores SFO\u2019s longstanding brand and identity and would violate federal and state intellectual property law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOakland Airport\u2019s hasty and unnecessary efforts and refusal to engage in discussions of alternative names have left the City and County of San Francisco no choice but to bring this complaint against the Defendant City of Oakland,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chiu said in a statement, first reported by ABC News<\/u><\/a>, that they had hoped Oakland would \u201ccome to its senses\u201d but refused to cooperate on an alternative name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
