Uri Berliner exits days after publication of an essay saying news organization no longer has an \u2018open-minded spirit\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An editor at National Public Radio who publicly accused<\/a> the news organization of having a liberal bias and a growing absence of \u201cviewpoint diversity\u201d has resigned, days after being suspended<\/a> without pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, Uri Berliner posted a screenshot of his resignation letter to NPR\u2019s CEO, Katherine Maher, in which he wrote: \u201cI am resigning from NPR<\/a>, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t support calls to defund NPR. I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay,\u201d Berliner added.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resignation of Berliner, who was a senior business editor, came just days after NPR suspended him without pay for five days following his essay in Free Press, an online news outlet founded by the former New York Times journalist Bari Weiss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his essay, Berliner said NPR has always had a liberal bent but he accused the partly publicly funded news organization of having embraced, in recent years, \u201cthe distilled worldview of a very small segment of the US population\u201d, adding: \u201cAn open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don\u2019t have an audience that reflects America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat wouldn\u2019t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it\u2019s devastating both for its journalism and its business model,\u201d Berliner continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to Berliner\u2019s essay, NPR\u2019s chief content officer, Edith Chapin, said she \u201cstrongly disagreed\u201d<\/a> with Berliner and said that \u201cinclusion \u2013 among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage \u2013 is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the publication of Berliner\u2019s essay, NPR suspended Berliner, saying he had not received approval<\/a> for outside work for other news outlets \u2013 a requirement for NPR journalists. The news organization also said: \u201cThe CEO is not involved in editorial decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
