{"id":26199,"date":"2024-04-18T06:45:09","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T11:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=26199"},"modified":"2024-04-18T07:03:21","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T12:03:21","slug":"california-christians-fight-back-against-city-removing-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=26199","title":{"rendered":"California Christians Fight Back Against City Removing Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A California Christian club is fighting to put their cross back on display after city officials used eminent domain to remove it while citing complaints of it being \u201creminiscent of KKK cross-burnings\u201d and offensive to \u201cdiverse communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Albany Lions Club had maintained their majestic 28-foot cross and lit it up for the Christmas and Easter holidays to send \u201cthe message of God\u2019s love\u201d and be a \u201ccomfort to the Christian community\u201d since 1971, a&nbsp;press release&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pacificjustice.org\/press\/california-town-tears-down-cross\/\">states<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the over 50 years it stood on Albany Hill, the cross also served as a meeting place for group prayers, weddings, baby dedications, and memorial services for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The structure was erected on private land owned by one of the club\u2019s members, but that land is now part of a dispute with the city of Albany, which seized the plot last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">To View TweetEnable Social Cookies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FoxNews\/status\/1780168636461617606?ref_src=twsrc^tfw\">View on Twitter<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to the civil liberties organization Pacific Justice Institute (PJI), there were \u201cno objections\u201d to the cross until 2016 when an \u201catheist group raised a complaint and convinced the Albany City Council to take up the cause of removing the cross.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2017, then-Mayor Peggy McQuaid publicly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.albanyca.org\/our-city\/hot-topics\/albany-hill-cross\">denounced<\/a>&nbsp;the club for lighting the cross on September 11:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Albany City Council was dismayed to learn that in a departure from historical practice, the cross on Albany Hill was lit by the Albany Lions Club on Monday, September 11. Flags on city buildings and parks were flown at \u00bd staff on that day which is an appropriate, non-denominational civic remembrance of that terrible and tragic day. I am sure many Albany residents paused during the day for personal reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I want to reiterate that the neither City Council nor the City of Albany endorses in any way the lighting of the cross for any occasion, religious or nationalistic, or supports its continued presence on public property<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In January 2023, the Alameda County Superior Court demanded the cross be removed, with the ruling claiming that the Lions Club did not need the cross for its \u201corganizational purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cApparently, according to the Court, only a church or religious group has a right to free exercise of religion,\u201d PJI said in its press release, arguing that the court \u201cfailed to recognize the Lions Club had a property right to display the cross, a right which the City recognized when it acquired the land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When the cross was officially taken down in June 2023, the mayor celebrated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe city has actually put its money where its mouth is, and our city looks a little bit more accepting now in a way that we think is consistent with our values,\u201d then-Mayor Aaron Tiedemann&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/2023\/06\/28\/a-cross-on-a-bay-area-hilltop-was-removed-the-fight-to-resurrect-it-is-heading-to-court\/\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em>East Bay Times<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tiedemann, who now sits on the Albany City Council, referred to the Lion Club\u2019s cross as a \u201cprivilege\u201d that had been taken away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFor the small local group of people that really want to see the cross stay, when you\u2019ve had such privilege for so long, losing it feels like being oppressed,\u201d the former mayor said. \u201cThat\u2019s going to be an adjustment for folks, but I think we will all get used to it, and I think it\u2019s a real benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The local publication went on to list out the complaints Tiedmann cited for removing the cross:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tiedemann, who grew up in Albany, said people have long complained about the cross for a litany of reasons: it symbolizes a preference of one religion over others, offends some members of the city\u2019s diverse communities, is reminiscent of KKK cross-burnings in the East Bay hills in the 1920s, and is an eyesore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Now, the Lions Club is filing a petition to reinstate the cross with the help of PJI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">To View TweetEnable Social Cookies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PacificJustice\/status\/1778200912269304152?ref_src=twsrc^tfw\">View on Twitter<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe City\u2019s public statements and actions have been hostile and targeted the Christian cross because [of] its religious message,\u201d the petition reads. \u201cThe City Council lacked neutrality and attacked the cross and the Lions for its free exercise of religion and free speech.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">PJI founder and president Brad Dacus argued in the group\u2019s statement that the First Amendment of the Constitution \u201cprotects individuals and private entities from such blatant state hostility to those wishing to express symbols of faith and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe at PJI are committed to defending such constitutionally protected expression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In an interview with Fox News, Dacus&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/bay-area-christians-fight-city-hostile-targeted-cross-removal-discriminatory-action\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the city of Albany is specifically targeting Christians.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf there was a giant LGBT flag or something like that, this city would embrace it. No problem. So it\u2019s specifically because of the viewpoint and the religious viewpoint and perspective of the cross. That\u2019s their agenda,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The civil rights defender says the case will be a slam dunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt is a vicious, blatant, anti-constitutional, discriminatory action by the City of Albany. And that\u2019s what makes this case so shocking.
