White House will be imposing new sanctions on Iran, targeting Tehran\u2019s missile and drone program, following the country\u2019s \u201cunprecedented\u201d air attack on Israel, White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan\u2002<\/u><\/a>announced<\/u><\/a> on Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new sanctions, set to take into effect \u201cin the coming days,\u201d will penalize Tehran for its attack on Israel over the weekend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sullivan stated the new sanctions will target \u201centities\u201d backing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran\u2019s Defense Ministry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese new sanctions and other measures will continue a steady drumbeat of pressure to contain and degrade Iran\u2019s military capacity and effectiveness and confront the full range of its problematic behaviors,\u201d Sullivan said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran launched over 300 missiles and drones at Israel on Saturday night in response to an Israeli airstrike in early April, which killed several Iranian military officials in Damascus, Syria. The majority of the drones and missiles were downed by Israel and its allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a>is coordinating with allies and partners, including the G7, and with bipartisan leaders in Congress, on a comprehensive response, \u201cSullivan said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe anticipate that our allies and partners will soon be following with their own sanctions,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. has targeted Iran with sanctions, looking to prevent Tehran from getting nuclear weapons and apply pressure on its economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen\u2002<\/u><\/a>also pointed to the sanctions during a news conference on Tuesday. She warned that Iran\u2019s conduct could lead to \u201ceconomic spillovers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom this weekend\u2019s attack to the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, Iran\u2019s actions threaten the region\u2019s stability and could cause economic spillovers,\u201d she said on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press<\/u><\/a> (AP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yellen also referenced the previous sanctions the Biden administration has imposed on Iran-funded groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve targeted over 500 individuals and entities connected to terrorism and terrorist financing by the Iranian regime and its proxies since the start of the Administration,\u201d Yellen said, according to AP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
