{"id":25656,"date":"2024-04-04T04:46:13","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T09:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=25656"},"modified":"2024-04-04T04:46:19","modified_gmt":"2024-04-04T09:46:19","slug":"largest-fresh-egg-producer-in-u-s-finds-bird-flu-in-chickens-at-texas-and-michigan-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=25656","title":{"rendered":"Largest fresh egg producer in U.S. finds bird flu in chickens at Texas and Michigan plants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The largest producer of fresh eggs in the U.S. said Tuesday it had temporarily halted production at a Texas plant<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/dairy-cattle-in-texas-and-kansas-have-tested-positive-for-bird-flu\"><u>\u2002after bird flu<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;was found in chickens, and officials said the virus had also been detected at a poultry facility in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/bird-flu-detected-in-flock-in-western-michigan-county\/\"><u>Michigan<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In Texas, Ridgeland, Mississippi-based Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. said in a statement that approximately 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets, about 3.6% of its total flock, were destroyed after the infection, avian influenza, was found at the facility in Parmer County, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The plant is on the Texas-New Mexico border in the Texas Panhandle about 85 miles southwest of Amarillo and about 370 miles northwest of Dallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;The Company continues to work closely with federal, state and local government officials and focused industry groups to mitigate the risk of future outbreaks and effectively manage the response,&#8221; according to the statement. &#8220;Cal-Maine Foods is working to secure production from other facilities to minimize disruption to its customers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The company said there is no known&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/baltimore\/news\/avian-flu-outbreak-leads-to-egg-shortage-price-hikes\/\"><u>bird flu risk associated with eggs<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;that are currently on the market and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/food-prices-bird-flu-avian-influenza-eggs-chicken-turkey-costs\/\"><u>no eggs have been recalled.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Eggs that are properly handled and cooked are safe to eat, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The announcement by Cal-Maine comes a day after state health officials said a person had been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rare-human-case-of-bird-flu-contracted-in-texas-after-direct-contact-with-dairy-cattle\/\"><u>diagnosed with bird flu after being in contact with cows\u2002<\/u><\/a>presumed to be infected, and that the risk to the public remains low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In Michigan, Michigan State University&#8217;s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has detected bird flu in a commercial poultry facility in Ionia County, according to the Michigan&#8217;s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The county is about 100 miles northwest of Detroit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The department said it received confirmation of the disease Monday from the lab and that it is the fourth time since 2022 that the disease was detected at a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/michigan-dnr-temporary-removal-of-bird-feeders-could-reduce-spread-of-avian-flu\/\"><u>commercial facility in Michigan<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Department spokesperson Jennifer Holton said Tuesday that state law prohibits the department from disclosing the type of poultry at the facility in Ionia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The facility has been placed under quarantine and the department does not anticipate any disruptions to supply chains across the state, Holton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rare-human-case-of-bird-flu-contracted-in-texas-after-direct-contact-with-dairy-cattle\/\"><u>human case in Texas\u2002<\/u><\/a>marks the first known instance globally of a person catching this version of bird flu from a mammal, federal health officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dairy cows in Texas and Kansas were reported to be infected with bird flu last week &#8211;
