NBC\u2019s \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d kicked off this weekend\u2019s show by mocking former President Trump and his hawking of $60 Bibles during Holy Week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The episode, which aired the night before Easter, began with a brief nod<\/u><\/a> to the Biblical story of the resurrection of Jesus before James Austin Johnson, reviving his role as Trump, entered on stage, where he compared himself to Jesus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s Easter, the time of year when I compare myself to Jesus Christ. That\u2019s just the thing I do now, and people seem to be okay with that \u2026 I\u2019m going to keep doing [it],\u201d Johnson said. \u201cAnd if you think that this is a bad look, imagine how weird it would be if I started selling Bibles. Well, I\u2019m selling Bibles.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Trump announced last week<\/u><\/a> that he is selling \u201cGod Bless the USA\u201d Bibles in partnership with country musician Lee Greenwood\u2002<\/u><\/a>ahead of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. In a video announcement, the former president said he thinks it is important for every American to have a copy of the Bible in their home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Johnson, holding up an apparent copy of the \u201cGod Bless the USA\u201d Bible, said, \u201cAs you know, I love the Bible. It\u2019s my favorite book, definitely read it. But my favorite part is probably the ending, how it all wraps up. But this is a very special Bible, and it can be yours for the high price of $60.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut I\u2019m not doing this for the money, I\u2019m doing this for the glory of God and for pandering and mostly for money,\u201d Johnson\u2019s Trump continued. \u201cBut it\u2019s so sad, religion and Christianity are totally gone from this country, and we need them back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Johnson joked the \u201cGod Bless the USA\u201d Bible comes with \u201csome beautiful illustrations,\u201d and various photos of Johnson\u2019s face apparently photoshopped onto Biblical images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The actual $60 King James Bible also features lyrics from Greenwood\u2019s \u201cGod Bless the U.S.A.,\u201d along with copies of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Pledge of Allegiance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell back to my beautiful Bible, which also includes the Constitution and Pledge of Allegiance, and I don\u2019t know \u2026 maybe Miranda rights? Which means, unfortunately we had to make some cuts,\u201d Johnson quipped, saying it would not include the Biblical stories of Amos or Habakkuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd if you order now, we\u2019ll also throw in a free Trump miracle toaster. You know, sometimes weirdos see a picture of Jesus or something in their toast, well what about the miracle of Trump?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Trump received a slew of criticism last week for his move to sell Bibles. The hosts of ABC\u2019s \u201cThe View\u201d blasted the initiative<\/u><\/a>, with one of them calling it \u201chypocrisy at its most religious,\u201d while former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) encouraged the former president to read what the Bible says about adultery<\/u><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
