MSNBC prime time host Rachel Maddow\u2002<\/u><\/a>blasted her own network over its recent decision to hire former Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel<\/u><\/a> as a political commentator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you care what I think about this, the fact that McDaniel is on the payroll at NBC News, to me that is inexplicable,\u201d Maddow said on her show Monday. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t hire a wise guy \u2026 a made man, like a mobster, to work in a DA\u2019s office. You wouldn\u2019t hire a pickpocket to work as a TA screener. And so, I find the decision to put her on the payroll inexplicable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McDaniel\u2019s hire, which was announced by the network late last week, has set off a firestorm of criticism<\/u><\/a> inside the network and an open revolt among household name hosts and anchors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maddow said she hopes NBC News would \u201creverse their decision\u201d to hire McDaniel, who appeared on \u201cMeet The Press\u201d over the weekend<\/u><\/a> and defended her previous comments on Trump, the 2020 election and Jan. 6, 2021, attack<\/u><\/a> on the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s not about Democratic party, Republican party, it\u2019s not about partisanship or right versus left,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt\u2019s about our system of government and undermining elections and going after democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maddow highlighted McDaniel\u2019s role in former President Trump\u2019s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and said NBC, like all news organizations, is currently tasked with \u201ctrying to cover an election \u2026 and cover bad actors who are using the rights and privileges of a democracy to end democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The host was among a slew of top talent at the network on Monday to use its airwaves to ridicule leadership over the decision to hire McDaniel, Nicolle Wallace, Jen Psaki and Joy Reid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maddow, one of the left-leaning network\u2019s longest tenured hosts, argued NBC News and its parent company could show strength by admitting hiring McDaniel was a mistake and ending their deal with the former RNC chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTake a minute, acknowledge that maybe it wasn\u2019t the right call,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is a sign of strength, not weakness, to acknowledge when you are wrong. And our country needs us to be strong right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
