{"id":25285,"date":"2024-03-25T22:42:43","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T03:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=25285"},"modified":"2024-03-25T22:42:48","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T03:42:48","slug":"volkswagen-workers-to-vote-on-union-representation-in-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=25285","title":{"rendered":"Volkswagen workers to vote on union representation in April"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Volkswagen workers at a Chattanooga, Tenn., plant will hold a union election between April 17 and 19, United Auto Workers announced on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The landmark vote could make the VW facility the UAW\u2019s first major win since a strike led to a new contract for \u201cBig Three\u201d workers last year, as the union&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/4333986-uaw-organize-nonunion-strike\/\"><u>eyes expansion in the South<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The workers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/4539738-tennessee-volkswagen-workers-ask-for-uaw-representation-vote\/\"><u>filed for an election<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;with the National Labor Relations Board last week. The UAW previously said it would ask for an election when 70 percent of the plant\u2019s 4,000 workers signed union cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019re voting yes to win a better life for ourselves and our families,\u201d VW worker Isaac Meadows said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\/volkswagen-workers-in-chattanooga-will-vote-in-their-union-election-on-april-17-19\/\"><u>statement<\/u><\/a>. \u201cWe need a say in our schedules, benefits, pay, and more. We\u2019re proud to work at Volkswagen, but we also know the value of a voice at work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Workers at the same Chattanooga plant, VW\u2019s only American facility, previously filed for a UAW election in 2014 and 2019 but failed each time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Over 10,000 nonunion workers have signed union cards at factories nationwide in recent months, the UAW said, part of its expansion plans. The union has already launched public campaigns at a<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/4490975-majority-alabama-mercedes-workers-join-uaw-union\/\"><u>\u2002Mercedes-Benz plant<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;near Tuscaloosa, Ala., a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/4440930-hyundai-workers-alabama-uaw\/\"><u>Hyundai factory<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in Montgomery, Ala., and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/4512793-toyota-plant-missouri-launches-union-drive-as-uaw-aims-to-expand\/\"><u>Toyota facility<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in Troy, Mo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Workers at more than two dozen other facilities are also actively organizing, the union added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Volkswagen said it respects the legal election process in a statement to The Hill last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe respect our workers\u2019 right to a democratic process and to determine who should represent their interests,\u201d the company said in a statement. \u201cWe will fully support an NLRB vote so every team member has a chance to vote in privacy in this important decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/4555338-volkswagen-workers-to-vote-on-union-representation-in-april\/\">Thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Volkswagen workers at a Chattanooga, Tenn., plant will hold a union election between April 17 and 19, United Auto Workers announced on Monday.
