{"id":23625,"date":"2024-02-08T01:32:08","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T07:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23625"},"modified":"2024-02-08T01:32:15","modified_gmt":"2024-02-08T07:32:15","slug":"facebook-and-instagram-will-label-more-ai-made-images-ahead-of-november-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23625","title":{"rendered":"Facebook and Instagram will label more AI-made images ahead of November election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Meta, which owns the two apps, said it can detect many AI images automatically, but it said finding and labeling AI-made audio and video will be harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The parent company of Facebook and Instagram said Tuesday it would ramp up its use of labels on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nightly-news\/video\/growing-concerns-amid-rise-of-deepfakes-of-2024-presidential-candidates-203114565697\">artificial intelligence-generated images<\/a>&nbsp;ahead of the November election but warned it doesn\u2019t yet have the ability to easily detect audio and video made with AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Meta&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/02\/labeling-ai-generated-images-on-facebook-instagram-and-threads\/\">said in a blog post<\/a>&nbsp;that people using its apps want transparency around the quickly improving technology known as generative AI and that the company\u2019s answer for now is to apply a label, \u201cImagined with AI,\u201d whenever possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s important that we help people know when photorealistic content they\u2019re seeing has been created using AI,\u201d Nick Clegg, Meta\u2019s president for global affairs, wrote in the blog post.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Clegg wrote that in the coming months, Meta would start applying the labels to images on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. He said the labels would appear in all languages supported by each app.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The timing coincides with the U.S. elections this year, including November\u2019s presidential race, as well as elections in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/global-elections-2024-preview-cb77b0940964c5c95a9affc8ebb6f0b7\">more than 50 other countries<\/a>, such as India and Mexico.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019re taking this approach through the next year, during which a number of important elections are taking place around the world,\u201d wrote Clegg, a former British deputy prime minister. \u201cDuring this time, we expect to learn much more about how people are creating and sharing AI content, what sort of transparency people find most valuable, and how these technologies evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Experts have warned that disinformation \u2014 including audio, video and images made with AI \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/misinformation\/disinformation-unprecedented-threat-2024-election-rcna134290\">poses an unprecedented threat in 2024<\/a>&nbsp;and that Americans are ill-prepared for what\u2019s coming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In one example last month, someone created a robocall&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/misinformation\/joe-biden-new-hampshire-robocall-fake-voice-deep-ai-primary-rcna135120\">from a fake President Joe Biden<\/a>&nbsp;telling New Hampshire residents not to vote, experts said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Clegg said Meta is optimistic about quickly detecting AI-generated images, including those made with software from other companies. He said new industrywide technical standards will make it possible for Meta to detect images made with AI software from Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney and Shutterstock.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The same isn\u2019t true with video and audio, he wrote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhile companies are starting to include signals in their image generators, they haven\u2019t started including them in AI tools that generate audio and video at the same scale, so we can\u2019t yet detect those signals and label this content from other companies,\u201d he wrote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the meantime, he said, Meta would ask people to disclose when they share AI-made video or audio so Meta can add a label.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe may apply penalties if they fail to do so,\u201d he warned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/facebook-instagram-to-label-ai-made-images-rcna137379\">Nbcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meta, which owns the two apps, said it can detect many AI images automatically, but it said finding and labeling AI-made audio and video will be harder.
