{"id":23604,"date":"2024-02-08T01:15:16","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T07:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23604"},"modified":"2024-02-08T01:15:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-08T07:15:24","slug":"us-faa-wants-air-carriers-to-boost-aviation-info-sharing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23604","title":{"rendered":"US FAA wants air carriers to boost aviation info sharing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) &#8211; The head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) met with airline CEOs on Wednesday and asked carriers to share more information to boost safety and identify potential problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker convened a meeting with airline CEOs, the agency said, to &#8220;ensure the aviation industry continues expanding safety management systems and finding ways to share information transparently to minimize risk and advance safety.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting came after the FAA last month grounded 171 Boeing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/BA.N\"><u>(BA.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;MAX 9 airplanes after a mid-air cabin panel blowout on a new Alaska Airlines plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday preliminary evidence suggests the plane was missing four key bolts when it left the Boeing factory. Whitaker told lawmakers Tuesday he is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/us-faa-chief-face-questions-boeing-after-max-9-emergency-2024-02-06\/\"><u>boosting oversight of Boeing<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">American Airlines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/AAL.O\"><u>(AAL.O), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>, Delta Air Lines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/DAL.N\"><u>(DAL.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>, United Airlines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/UAL.O\"><u>(UAL.O), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>, Southwest Airlines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/LUV.N\"><u>(LUV.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>, Alaska Airlines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/ALK.N\"><u>(ALK.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>, JetBlue&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/JBLU.O\"><u>(JBLU.O), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>, UPS&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/UPS.N\"><u>(UPS.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and FedEx&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/FDX.N\"><u>(FDX.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;took part in the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Air carriers share information like maintenance issues through the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST), a government-aviation industry partnership founded in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2023, the FAA proposed requiring charter, commuter, air tour operators, and aircraft manufacturers to implement a key safety tool aimed at reducing accidents. The agency wants to extend a mandate to adopt so-called Safety Management Systems (SMS), which are policies and procedures to proactively identify and address potential operational hazards early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said in a statement the airline fully supports expanding FAA oversight &#8220;throughout safety management systems across the industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">United CEO Scott Kirby said in a statement the airline agreed &#8220;the highest levels of safety are best achieved through partnerships at all levels.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. airlines have been required to have SMS since 2018 and some aerospace companies already voluntarily have SMS programs like Boeing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/BA.N\"><u>(BA.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>, and Raytheon-subsidiary Pratt &amp; Whitney&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/RTX.N\"><u>(RTX.N), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Congress in 2020 directed the FAA to mandate SMS for aircraft manufacturers as part of a wide-ranging certification reform bill following two fatal Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 but the FAA&#8217;s proposed rule goes beyond requirements from lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">SMS systems require four key components &#8211; safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/faa-wants-air-carriers-boost-aviation-information-sharing-2024-02-07\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) &#8211; The head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) met with airline CEOs on Wednesday and asked carriers to share more information to boost safety and identify potential problems.
