{"id":23185,"date":"2024-01-29T01:30:10","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T07:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23185"},"modified":"2024-01-29T01:30:15","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T07:30:15","slug":"canceled-us-joint-exercises-in-africa-shows-washingtons-influence-abroad-slipping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23185","title":{"rendered":"Canceled US Joint Exercises in Africa Shows Washington&#8217;s Influence Abroad Slipping"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Retired CIA intelligence officer and State Department official Larry Johnson told Sputnik the move may be related to internal pressure not to work alongside \u201ctroops associated with coup governments.&#8221;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The United States military leadership has scrapped plans to hold joint exercises with several African states such as Sudan, Mali, Niger,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240103\/african-nations-up-in-arms-over-ethiopia-somaliland-pact-1115958079.html\">Ethiopia<\/a>, Eritrea and Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to the Washington Post, the Pentagon\u2019s change of plans was, \u201cat least in part,\u201d the result of US Democrats pressuring the Biden administration to bar \u201ctroops associated with coup governments\u201d from participating in US-led&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240127\/reigniting-cold-war-flames-natos-steadfast-defender-2024-exercises-1116433099.html\">military exercises<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Exercises such as these are usually planned many months in advance, so the decision to scrap these plans means \u201cthere&#8217;s an issue with the governments that were supposed to participate,\u201d said retired CIA intelligence officer and State Department official Larry Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Describing the military exercises\u2019 cancellation as a \u201csignificant\u201d development, Johnson told Sputnik that this move by the Pentagon may have also been prompted by the decision of the host African governments not to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIn any event, I think what it does signify is that US influence over other countries, its ability to basically tell countries what to do and compel countries to follow US policy, is slipping, that the US influence in areas like Africa is growing weaker, not stronger,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Johnson also suggested that the decision by Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) may be related to this development, considering that ECOWAS is primarily regarded as an entity \u201cunder Western influence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to him, the fact that these countries chose to part ways with ECOWAS and pursue \u201cbilateral agreements among themselves\u201d does seem like signs of them \u201cdistancing themselves from US control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikglobe.com\/20240128\/canceled-us-joint-exercises-in-africa-shows-washingtons-influence-abroad-slipping-1116453371.html\">Sputnikglobe<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Retired CIA intelligence officer and State Department official Larry Johnson told Sputnik the move may be related to internal pressure not to work alongside \u201ctroops associated with coup governments.&#8221; The United States military leadership has scrapped plans to hold joint exercises with several African states such as Sudan, Mali, Niger,&nbsp;Ethiopia, Eritrea and Burkina Faso.
