{"id":23106,"date":"2024-01-26T05:56:22","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T11:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23106"},"modified":"2024-01-26T05:56:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T11:56:27","slug":"white-house-clinic-improperly-distributed-controlled-substances-during-previous-administrations-new-report-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=23106","title":{"rendered":"White House clinic improperly distributed controlled substances during previous administrations, new report says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The White House Medical Unit had \u201csevere and systemic problems\u201d with its pharmacy operations and provided&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-care\">health care<\/a>&nbsp;to ineligible staffers before the Biden administration, according to a scathing report by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/military\">Defense Department<\/a>&#8216;s Office of Inspector General.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The multiyear investigation was prompted in 2018 by complaints alleging that a senior military medical officer in the White House clinic had \u201cengaged in improper medical practices.\u201d The probe included on-site visits and focused on a three-year period during the Trump administration, as well as employee interviews dating to 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The White House Medical Unit dispensed prescription medications, including controlled substances, to ineligible White House staff,&#8221; said the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2024\/Jan\/09\/2003373440\/-1\/-1\/1\/DODIG-2024-044_REDACTED SECURE.PDF\">report<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2024\/Jan\/09\/2003373440\/-1\/-1\/1\/DODIG-2024-044_REDACTED SECURE.PDF\">,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2024\/Jan\/09\/2003373440\/-1\/-1\/1\/DODIG-2024-044_REDACTED SECURE.PDF\">\u2002<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2024\/Jan\/09\/2003373440\/-1\/-1\/1\/DODIG-2024-044_REDACTED SECURE.PDF\">which was\u2002<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2024\/Jan\/09\/2003373440\/-1\/-1\/1\/DODIG-2024-044_REDACTED SECURE.PDF\">released this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The unit also kept records for Schedule II drugs \u2014 such as fentanyl, hydrocodone, morphine and oxycodone \u2014 in the same inventory that housed records for other medications, according to the report, even though federal regulations require them to be kept separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The clinic\u2019s handwritten records from the Trump administration \u201cfrequently contained errors in the medication counts, illegible text, or crossed out text that was not appropriately annotated,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The White House Medical Unit, which consists of multiple clinics in the Washington area, is<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>staffed by military and civilian employees and overseen by the Defense Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, was the White House physician to Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump before he left in 2018. His congressional office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The inspector general\u2019s report did not name Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A separate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/scathing-report-finds-rep-ronny-jackson-engaged-inappropriate-conduct-white-n1259437\">Pentagon inspector general report<\/a>, from 2021, said Jackson had engaged in \u201cinappropriate conduct\u201d when he was the White House physician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The White House referred requests for comment to the Defense Department, which did not comment on the report&#8217;s findings. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The report also said the White House Medical Office spent tens of thousands of dollars during the Trump administration on brand name medications instead of less expensive generic equivalents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">From 2017 to 2019, the unit spent about $46,500 on Ambien, a sleeping medication, which the report says is \u201c174 times more expensive than the generic equivalent.\u201d The clinic also spent nearly $100,000 during that period on Provigil, a stimulant that is \u201c55 times more expensive than the generic equivalent,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, investigators tried to obtain earlier records, but White House Medical Unit officials said they kept pharmaceutical records for only two years, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithout oversight from qualified pharmacy staff, the White House Medical Unit\u2019s pharmaceutical management practices may have been subject to prescribing errors and inadequate medication management, increasing the risk to the health and safety of patients treated within the unit,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It also detailed the dispensing of medication to ineligible White House staff members, which meant some staffers \u201creceived free specialty care and surgery at military medical treatment facilities.\u201d The unit also dispensed medications like Ambien and Provigil \u201cwithout verifying the patient\u2019s identity,\u201d the report said.
