{"id":22279,"date":"2024-01-05T03:13:49","date_gmt":"2024-01-05T09:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=22279"},"modified":"2024-01-05T03:13:56","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T09:13:56","slug":"at-least-nine-us-state-capitol-buildings-evacuated-after-bomb-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=22279","title":{"rendered":"At least nine US state capitol buildings evacuated after bomb threats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At least nine state capitol buildings across the US were under evacuation orders on Wednesday due to bomb threats, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Government buildings in Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/mississippi\">Mississippi<\/a>&nbsp;and Montana received bomb threats via email to offices of secretaries of states and legislative officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/state-capitol-threat-evacuation-lockdown-dfef5fbb98ec6572474807c260533b05\">said<\/a>&nbsp;it was working with state, local and federal law enforcement to gather, share and act on information. The agency said it was aware of numerous hoax bomb threats at state capitol buildings, but had \u201cno information to indicate a specific and credible threat\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/fbi\">FBI<\/a>&nbsp;takes hoax threats very seriously because it puts innocent people at risk,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Officials from some of these states have also confirmed the threats and issued statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Scott Driscoll of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/connecticut\">Connecticut<\/a>&nbsp;state capitol police told staff and legislators: \u201cEarlier this morning, the Connecticut State Capitol Police received complaints from numerous employees about a suspicious email that was received. The email, which apparently was sent to numerous states, claimed to have placed multiple explosives in the Capitol Building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Andy Beshear, the Kentucky governor, wrote on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovAndyBeshear\/status\/1742568274376765802\">X<\/a>: \u201cWhile everyone is safe, KSP has asked everyone to evacuate the state Capitol and is investigating a threat received by the Secretary of State\u2019s Office. We are aware of similar threats made to other offices across the country. We thank our first responders for their quick response, and we will provide more updates.\u201d<br><br>The Michigan state police spokesperson Lori Dougovito said: \u201cIn response to a threat made involving the Michigan state capitol building in Lansing, we can confirm a threat was emailed to a general account for the Michigan state capitol commission around 7.45am, today, Wednesday, 3 Jan, 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are aware of similar threats sent to government agencies across the country,\u201d Dougovito said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dougovito said the building would remain closed for the rest of the day as the situation remains under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kentucky state police evacuated their capitol \u201cout of an abundance of caution\u201d, Michon Lindstrom, spokesperson for the Kentucky secretary of state, Michael Adams, told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/01\/03\/state-capitols-bomb-threats\">Axios<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Diamond Garcia, a Hawaii state representative told local news outlet&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2024\/01\/03\/authorities-responding-reported-bomb-threat-state-capitol\/?outputType=amp\">Hawaii News Now<\/a>&nbsp;that most states that had received the threat had been given the all clear, except Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThey\u2019re still working through it here. Making sure there is no actual threat to those who work here,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Other states, like Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/montana\">Montana<\/a>&nbsp;had also reopened their capitols since no explosives were found, local authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-14\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Idaho Capital Sun reported the state capitol in Boise was searched and cleared early morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Idaho state police communications director Aaron Snell told the Idaho Capital Sun: \u201cAt about 5:30am. Idaho received the threat. In response, ISP mobilized explosive detection canines and deployed additional troopers to assist (the department of administration) personnel in conducting thorough searches of both the interior and exterior of the building. By 7.30am, the building search concluded with no explosives found.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mississippi department of public safety&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MissDPS\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on Facebook that the \u201cthreat has now been cleared\u201d, adding that the building was thoroughly searched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For many of these states, these threats come in the early days of their legislative sessions. Wednesday marks Maine\u2019s first day of legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In recent weeks, other hoax threats were made to individual politicians. Last week, the Republican Florida senator Rick Scott\u2019s home was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/dec\/28\/swat-team-florida-senator-rick-scott-home\">swatted<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On Christmas Day, in one of several instances of receiving similar threats, authorities arrived at the home of the republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in Rome,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/state-of-georgia\">Georgia<\/a>, in response to a swatting call to a suicide hotline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/jan\/03\/state-capitol-buildings-evacuated-bomb-threat-georgia-michigan-kentucky\">Theguardian<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least nine state capitol buildings across the US were under evacuation orders on Wednesday due to bomb threats, according to officials.
