{"id":21902,"date":"2023-12-27T00:48:14","date_gmt":"2023-12-27T06:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=21902"},"modified":"2023-12-27T00:48:19","modified_gmt":"2023-12-27T06:48:19","slug":"migrant-caravan-advances-north-as-u-s-officials-head-to-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=21902","title":{"rendered":"Migrant caravan advances north as U.S. officials head to Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">VILLA COMALTITLAN, Dec 26 (Reuters) &#8211; Thousands of migrants and asylum seekers moved slowly north across the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Tuesday in a caravan hoping to reach the U.S. border, one day before top U.S. officials planned to visit Mexico to discuss migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security chief Alejandro Mayorkas will visit Mexico to meet with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The officials will discuss &#8220;unprecedented irregular migration in the Western Hemisphere and identify ways Mexico and the United States will address border security challenges,&#8221; according to a statement from State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The meeting comes a week after U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Lopez Obrador by telephone, during which the two leaders said that more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/mexican-president-speak-biden-thursday-migration-eyed-2023-12-21\/\">enforcement<\/a>\u00a0was needed at their shared frontier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On Wednesday, migrants and asylum seekers, many carrying small children, walked along the highway near the southern Mexican city of Villa Comaltitl\u00e1n. Some held a banner reading &#8220;Exodus from poverty.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rosa, from El Salvador, said she hoped the officials would ease the suffering of migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;We are looking for something better for our children and our families,&#8221; she said as she walked. &#8220;I hope this touches their hearts,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Migrants and asylum seekers transit through Mexico to the U.S. to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/record-numbers-migrants-head-us-border-fresh-test-biden-2023-09-21\/\">escape violence<\/a>, economic distress and negative impacts of climate change, according the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The number crossing the perilous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/un-refugee-chief-urges-western-states-deter-migrants-dangerous-routes-2023-12-07\/\">Darien Gap<\/a>&nbsp;straddling Colombia and Central America has topped half a million this year, double last year&#8217;s record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Migrant rights activist Luis Garc\u00eda Villagr\u00e1n criticized the meeting, saying the officials&#8217; main concerns are domestic electoral issues, and that more enforcement efforts aimed at stopping migrants from reaching the U.S. border would only hurt the poorest of the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;They want women and children to be bargaining chips,&#8221; he said, speaking alongside the caravan on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;We are not bargaining chips for any politicians.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/migrant-caravan-advances-north-us-officials-head-mexico-2023-12-26\/\">reuters<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VILLA COMALTITLAN, Dec 26 (Reuters) &#8211; Thousands of migrants and asylum seekers moved slowly north across the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Tuesday in a caravan hoping to reach the U.S. border, one day before top U.S. officials planned to visit Mexico to discuss migration.
