Hospitalizations have been increasing for more than a month and are expected to continue to rise given holiday travel and gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The CDC on Friday said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/respiratory-viruses\/data-research\/dashboard\/snapshot.html\">report\u2002<\/a>that the \u201camount of respiratory illness (fever plus cough or sore throat) causing people to seek healthcare is elevated or increasing across most areas of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A new COVID-19 variant known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/health-news\/articles\/2023-12-14\/what-to-know-about-the-new-covid-19-variant-jn-1\">JN.1<\/a>&nbsp;is responsible for about 1 in 5 new coronavirus cases, according to CDC&nbsp;<a href=\"#variant-proportions\">estimates<\/a>. It\u2019s the fastest growing variant in the U.S. The agency said in an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/respiratory-viruses\/whats-new\/SARS-CoV-2-variant-JN.1.html\">update\u2002<\/a>that it is unclear to what extent the variant is contributing to the increases in COVID-19 metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While tests, treatments and vaccines are expected to work on JN.1, its continued growth in the U.S. \u201csuggests that it is either more transmissible or better at evading our immune systems,\u201d according to the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">However, JN.1 doesn\u2019t appear to cause more severe disease, and the agency assesses that the strain does not present an increased public health risk relative to other circulating variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">COVID-19 is causing the most cases, hospitalizations and deaths of any respiratory virus circulating, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSo while we all wish we could leave COVID in the rearview mirror, it is still here with us,\u201d CDC Director Mandy Cohen said at an event this week. \u201cAnd so we need to make sure that we are continuing to take it very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cohen encouraged Americans to get vaccinated, acknowledging that uptake for the COVID-19 vaccine as well as flu and RSV shots are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/health-news\/articles\/2023-11-21\/covid-19-vaccine-uptake-disappointing-ahead-of-holidays-winter\">low<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/health-news\/articles\/2023-12-15\/covid-19-hospitalizations-increasing-ahead-of-holidays\">Usnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coronavirus hospitalizations have been increasing for more than a month and are expected to continue to rise given holiday travel and gatherings.
