{"id":21389,"date":"2023-12-14T03:29:16","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T09:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=21389"},"modified":"2023-12-14T03:29:21","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T09:29:21","slug":"nearly-half-of-5-million-veterans-screened-found-to-have-potential-toxic-substance-exposure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=21389","title":{"rendered":"Nearly half of 5 million veterans screened found to have potential toxic substance exposure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Nearly half of the 5 million veterans that have been screened by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under a new law have reported at least one possible exposure to toxic substances during their military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Announcing the 5 million screening milestone, the VA revealed that 2.1 million veterans \u2014 or 43 percent of those screened \u2014 were potentially exposed to such substances during their service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A variety of toxic exposures can come up in these screenings, but the most common were exposures to burn pits and Agent Orange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Exposure to burn pits and other airborne hazards that can be encountered during military service can cause a&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Acute effects include eye irritation,serious effects, including some cancers.\"><u>variety of cancers<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;including those affecting the brain, neck, kidneys and pancreas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Agent Orange is a herbicide that was used during the Vietnam War.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/24689-agent-orange-effects\"><u>It can cause<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;bladder cancer, blood cancers, Parkinson\u2019s disease and birth defects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The screenings were launched as part of the PACT Act, a 2022 law that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/3595753-biden-signs-veterans-toxic-exposure-bill-into-law\/\"><u>expanded benefits for veterans<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;who were exposed to toxic substances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">VA Secretary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/denis-mcdonough\/\"><u>Denis McDonough\u2002<\/u><\/a>said in a written statement that the screenings are aimed at improving health care and detecting \u201cpotential health challenges as early as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/4356583-veterans-toxic-exposure-pact-act-screening\/\">Thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly half of the 5 million veterans that have been screened by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under a new law have reported at least one possible exposure to toxic substances during their military service.
