It affects 3.3 million U.S. adults"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Health officials on Friday released the first nationally representative estimate of how many U.S. adults have chronic fatigue syndrome: 3.3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s number is larger than previous studies have suggested, and is likely boosted by some of the patients with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/long-covid-breakthrough-infections-e05e67c5bb12c18c594aaf5ec6dec954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long COVID<\/a>. The condition clearly \u201cis not a rare illness,\u201d said the CDC\u2019s Dr. Elizabeth Unger, one of the report\u2019s co-authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Chronic fatigue is characterized by at least six months of severe exhaustion not helped by bed rest. Patients also report pain, brain fog and other symptoms that can get worse after exercise, work or other activity.
