University of Southern California (USC) economics professor John Strauss, who is Jewish, has been barred from campus because of a doctored video circulated by anti-Israel activists who claim he said all Palestinians should be killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fact, as the full video (clumsily included here by an anti-Israel activist) shows, Strauss was referring specifically to the Hamas terrorist organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nVideo 1: \u201d \u2026 should be killed, and I hope they are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Video 2: \u201d You people are ignorant. Really ignorant. Hamas are murderers. That\u2019s all they are. Every one of them should be killed, and I hope they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian, and Muslim activists only cited the former video in pushing for USC to take against Strauss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Los Angeles Times<\/em> reported<\/a> Sunday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nAs [Strauss\u2019s] remarks raced across the internet, his condemnation of Hamas was often excised, leaving only his \u201chope\u201d for \u201call\u201d to be killed. Captions and comments online framed his demand for \u201cevery one\u201d to be killed in myriad, at times deceptive, ways. One Instagram post shared to millions of users claimed falsely that Strauss told the students, \u201c[I] hope you get killed\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within a day, an associate dean told Strauss that he was on paid administrative leave, barred from campus, and that he would no longer teach his undergraduates this semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within the week, a petition demanding that USC fire Strauss for his \u201cracist, xenophobic behavior\u201d and comments that \u201cpromote and incite violence\u201d had collected more than 6,500 signatures.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The UK Daily Mail<\/em> noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nStrauss said he was provoked by what he felt were anti-Semitic and anti-Israel sentiments overheard while walking to class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018I\u2019m Jewish, I\u2019m very pro-Israel,\u2019 he told USC Annenberg Media. \u2018And so I yelled out \u2018Israel forever. Hamas are murderers.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
USC\u2019s free speech policy states<\/a>: \u201cThe legitimate expression of differing opinions and concerns, including unpopular, controversial or dissident viewpoints, is an essential element of the academic process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
