{"id":20565,"date":"2023-11-23T03:39:22","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T09:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=20565"},"modified":"2023-11-23T03:39:26","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T09:39:26","slug":"theyve-worked-us-to-death-macys-workers-to-strike-on-black-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=20565","title":{"rendered":"\u2018They\u2019ve worked us to death\u2019: Macy\u2019s workers to strike on Black Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Four hundred workers in Washington state to strike, alleging the company \u2013 which pays millions to executives \u2013 is not playing fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Macy\u2019s workers are planning to strike on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/black-friday\">Black Friday<\/a>, alleging unfair labor practices and the retailer\u2019s failure to reach a new union contract deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Four hundred workers at Macy\u2019s locations in Washington state are planning action after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ufcw3000.org\/news\/2023\/10\/11\/macys-bargaining-update-96-vote-to-authorize-a-ulp-strike\">96%\u2002<\/a>of workers voted in favor of authorizing the strike in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2021 and 2022, Macy\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/794367\/000162828023005942\/m-20230302xexx991.htm\">reported\u2002<\/a>profits of over $1bn. The company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/s202.q4cdn.com\/285121676\/files\/doc_financials\/2022\/ar\/2022ar.pdf\">spent<\/a>&nbsp;$600m on stock buybacks and paid out $173m in dividends to shareholders in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The union has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ufcw3000.org\/news\/2023\/11\/15\/no-deal-reached-with-macys-todaynbspmacys-workers-its-time-to-stand-up\">criticized<\/a>&nbsp;these profits and the Macy\u2019s chief executive Jeff Gennette\u2019s $11m annual pay package as the company refuses to budge on wage increases the union is asking for in a new contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe would like them to share some of those profits so we can have a liveable wage,\u201d said Azia Domingo, who has worked at Macy\u2019s in Tukwila, Washington, for 21 years. \u201cMacy\u2019s CEO gets $11m per year while a lot of his workers rely on food banks, and some can\u2019t even afford to see doctors because of the low wages and the expensive healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5418aa2ce4b097579b5c27e5\/t\/63d46a2d4d425935bd2b0b6b\/1674865198666\/Macys+Furniture+Gallery+2021+-+2023.pdf\">Starting pay<\/a>&nbsp;in the most recent contract with Macy\u2019s was at or near Washington state\u2019s minimum wage, which goes up to to $16.28 an hour from 1 January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Domingo said low pay has made it difficult to attract and retain workers, while not properly compensating workers who have put in years of service with the company, resulting in chronic understaffing and higher workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cA lot of times on the floor there will be one person covering everything \u2013 and that\u2019s hard. More and more people are having to take on more,\u201d added Domingo. \u201cWe work long hours. Our job titles keep getting longer and longer, and Macy\u2019s isn\u2019t wanting to invest in their employees and invest in keeping them long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The union, UFCW Local 3000, is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ufcw3000.org\/news\/2023\/11\/15\/no-deal-reached-with-macys-todaynbspmacys-workers-its-time-to-stand-up\">planning<\/a>&nbsp;a striking workers\u2019 parade on Black Friday at the Macy\u2019s Southcenter location in Tukwila, outside Seattle, to kick off the strike. Other workers represented by the union and community members will also join. Thousands of people have signed on to a petition supporting the workers\u2019 strike and pledging not to cross the picket line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Liisa Luick, another long-time sales associate at Macy\u2019s in Lynnwood, Washington, claimed she had been subjected to unfair labor practices. Luick said she was suspended for two weeks without pay last year after calling the police in response to an individual posing a safety threat at the store. She said workers should not have to fear losing their jobs or being reprimanded for calling emergency services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Other unfair labor practice charges filed by the union include being prohibited by Macy\u2019s from speaking to workers in the workplace, surveillance of union members and bargaining in bad faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had assaults in our stores, and we\u2019ve had shootings out in our parking lots at the time when we have to walk out to our cars with no consideration at all,\u201d said Luick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She said pay had lagged far behind inflation even as Macy\u2019s has been immensely profitable, as executives have been paid multimillion-dollar salaries, and as the company has put lots of money into publicity campaigns such as the Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Day Parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThey\u2019ve worked us to death on skeletal staffing, and it\u2019s just not fair,\u201d said Luick. \u201cWhen we see that they\u2019ve made all these billions, when they pledged to put money back into the business, they\u2019re establishing 30 new stores. They have the Macy\u2019s Day Parade, they have the fireworks. We\u2019re angry, and even our customers comment on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A spokesperson for Macy\u2019s said in an email in response to the strike and demands made by workers for a new contract: \u201cMacy\u2019s seeks to reach a deal that is mutually beneficial to the colleague, company and union.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/nov\/22\/macys-workers-strike-black-friday-thanksgiving\">Theguardian<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four hundred workers in Washington state to strike, alleging the company \u2013 which pays millions to executives \u2013 is not playing fair.
