An Iraqi \u201cresistance\u201d group has claimed responsibility for drone strikes against American outposts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As many as three locations in Syria where US troops are illegally deployed have been targeted by the \u201cIslamic Resistance\u201d of Iraq, the group said in a statement on Monday, as quoted by local media outlets. The Pentagon claimed that US troops had intercepted at least two UAVs while taking no casualties or damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citing sources on the ground, the Lebanon-based news channel Al-Mayadeen reported on Monday that \u201cexplosions could be heard\u201d at the Al-Omar oilfield in Deir ez-Zor province. There were also reports of drone strikes on Al-Shaddadi in Hasakah province and on At-Tanf, the heavily fortified American base in the south of Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A group calling itself \u2018The Islamic Resistance in Iraq\u2019 has claimed responsibility for the attacks, issuing a statement<\/a> that it targeted US bases near Al-Omar and Al-Shaddadi, and achieved \u201cdirect hits\u201d on the bases of \u201cAmerican occupation.\u201d Images circulating alongside the statement, however, turned out to be from 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n American troops on Monday morning \u201cdestroyed two one-way attack drones near US and Coalition forces in southwest Syria before they reached their intended targets,\u201d the US Central Command said<\/a> in a statement on X, formerly Twitter. There were no casualties from the attack and no damage was done, CENTCOM added, noting that it was \u201cvigilantly monitoring the situation in the region and will take necessary and proportionate action\u201d to defend US troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Up to 1,000 US troops are currently deployed in Syria, occupying key oil fields and Euphrates river crossings with the support of a Kurdish-led militia. The government in Damascus has repeatedly protested that their presence violates international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n US President Joe Biden fueled rumors of a drone attack by interrupting the \u201cBidenomics\u201d event and saying he had to deal with \u201canother issue\u201d in the White House Situation Room. According to Reuters, there was no emergency, only a routine briefing on the current situation in Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The White House and the Pentagon have\u00a0indicated they believe Iran was the force behind a recent string of drone and rocket attacks on US bases in Syria and Iraq.
