In an effort to court blue-collar workers, former President Donald Trump traveled to Michigan on Wednesday<\/a> to deliver a speech aimed at courting the support of autoworkers at a time when their largest union is on strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike President Biden, who accepted an invitation by the United Auto Workers to join striking workers on a picket line outside Detroit on Tuesday, Trump spoke at a non-union plant in Clinton Township, but portrayed himself as a champion of union members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI side with the autoworkers of America,\u201d Trump said. He laid out what he called his \u201cvision of economic nationalism\u201d before a modest crowd, many of whom held up pre-printed signs that read \u201cUnion members for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, UAW President Shawn Fain blasted Trump\u2019s planned speech at the non-union plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll you have to do is look at his track record,\u201d Fain said. \u201cHis track record speaks for itself. In 2008, during the Great Recession, he blamed UAW members, he blamed our contracts for everything that was wrong with these companies \u2014 that\u2019s a complete lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Wednesday\u2019s speech, Trump\u2019s nationalist vision consisted largely of attacks on the electric cars and trucks that the U.S. auto industry has been transitioning to across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe damn things don\u2019t go far enough and they\u2019re too expensive,\u201d Trump said of EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also spent much of his campaign speech attacking Biden, who he portrayed as having sold out the auto industry to China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to Trump\u2019s remarks, Kevin Munoz, a spokesperson for the Biden-Harris campaign issued a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump\u2019s low-energy, incoherent \u2018speech\u2019 at a non-union factory in Michigan was a pathetic, recycled attempt to feign support for working Americans,\u201d he said, adding that it was Trump \u201cwho let China get ahead in the race to the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only once during his remarks did Trump bother to mention his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, which recent polls show is all but his to claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou know we\u2019re competing with the job candidates. They are all running for a job. No, they\u2019re all job candidates. They\u2019ll do anything, secretary of something. They even say VP, does anybody see any VP in the group? I don\u2019t think so,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
