Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R) defended a six-week abortion ban after former President Trump criticized a similar ban Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing \u2018terrible\u2019 about standing up for life.\u201d Kemp posted on X<\/u><\/a> Tuesday. \u201cIn addition to passing the heartbeat bill, Georgia has proudly protected and valued life through implementing adoption and foster care reforms, and combatting human trafficking \u2014and will continue to do so as long as I\u2019m governor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abortion is currently banned in Georgia after about six weeks into pregnancy. The Georgia Supreme Court reinstated the ban<\/u><\/a> last November, putting a lower court ruling<\/u><\/a> on hold where a judge called the ban \u201cunconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump took aim at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R) for signing a six-week abortion ban, calling the move \u201ca terrible thing and a terrible mistake\u201d during an interview on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d Trump added that he would find a solution with which \u201cboth sides will be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s remarks faced some blowback and could pose risks for the GOP presidential front-runner\u2002in Iowa<\/u><\/a>, where 70 percent of Trump\u2019s supporters say they were in favor of a state law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, according to a New York Times\/Siena College poll<\/u><\/a> released last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R) also defended a law<\/u><\/a> she signed that bans most abortions after six weeks of presidency, following Trump\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s never a \u2018terrible thing\u2019 to protect innocent life,\u201d Reynolds said Tuesday in a post on X.<\/u><\/a> \u201cI\u2019m proud of the fetal heartbeat bill the Iowa legislature passed and I signed in 2018 and again earlier this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has also not committed to endorsing any candidate in the 2024 GOP primary race yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m remaining neutral, but I don\u2019t just want to rule it out down the road. I think it\u2019s really important right now to encourage candidates to come to Iowa,\u201d Reynolds\u00a0told<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Shannon Bream during an interview on Fox News Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
