NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 The Toronto International Film Festival<\/u><\/a> may be over but it\u2019s biggest sale has just gone through. Netflix has acquired Richard Linklater\u2019s \u201cHit Man,\u201d<\/u><\/a> starring Glen Powell, for $20 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHit Man,\u201d which Linklater and Powell co-wrote, stars the \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d actor as a New Orleans psychology professor who also works undercover posing as a hit man for the police in sting operations to catch would-be murders. The film, a comic, existential riff on the hit-man genre, was one of the breakout hits of TIFF, which concluded Sunday.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netflix didn\u2019t announce release plans yet for \u201cHit Man,\u201d which also played at the Venice Film Festival. The film, which co-stars Adria Arjona as a wife who wants her husband dead, is loosely based on a true story detailed in a Skip Hollandsworth-written Texas Monthly article<\/u><\/a> from 2001 about faux-hit-man Gary Johnson.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview in Toronto, Linklater, the veteran independent filmmaker of \u201cBoyhood\u201d said he and Powell elected to make the film before selling it to a distributor to avoid some of the pitfalls of modern Hollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt used to be the head of a studio would sit down with you, talk, maybe say, \u2018I think you\u2019ve got the movie in you. Let\u2019s do it.\u2019 Now, they don\u2019t even want to hear from you. You\u2019re up against algorithms and marketing in advance,\u201d said Linklater. \u201cSo it was kind of great to go: \u2018Let\u2019s just make the movie and bet on ourselves.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That bet has paid off in a fall-festival movie market that\u2019s been disrupted by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. It\u2019s been speculated that, with pipelines potentially drying up, studios and streamers might be more eager to pick up finished films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the \u201cHit Man\u201d sale is the largest yet of the season. Netflix, which also distributed\u00a0Linklater\u2019s previous movie, \u201cApollo 10 1\/2,\u201d<\/u><\/a>\u00a0earlier acquired Anna Kendrick\u2019s directorial debut, \u201cWoman of the Hour,\u201d following its premiere in Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
