{"id":17695,"date":"2023-09-11T04:02:03","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T09:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=17695"},"modified":"2023-09-11T04:02:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T09:02:07","slug":"mccaul-says-tuberville-holds-paralyzing-defense-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=17695","title":{"rendered":"McCaul says Tuberville holds \u2018paralyzing\u2019 Defense Department"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman&nbsp;Michael McCaul\u2002(R-Texas) said Sunday that Sen.&nbsp;Tommy Tuberville\u2019s\u2002(R-Ala.) holds on the confirmations of more than 300 military officers is \u201cparalyzing\u201d the Department of Defense.<br>\u201cThis is paralyzing the Department of Defense,\u201d McCaul said on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of The Union.\u201d \u201cThis idea that one man in the Senate can hold this up for months, I understand maybe promotions, but nominations, is paralyzing the Department of Defense.\u201d&nbsp;<br>The six-month hold on more than 300 senior military officers\u2019 confirmations has drawn fresh criticism from both sides of the aisle as the Senate returned from a monthlong recess.&nbsp;<br>The policy Tuberville is protesting allows for paid leave and travel reimbursement for service members seeking an abortion, which Tuberville argues is a violation of the Hyde Amendment, a rule that prohibits federal funds from being used for abortion.&nbsp;<br>Calling the holds a \u201cnational security problem,\u201d McCaul said he wishes Tuberville would reconsider it as the issue has been \u201cworked out\u201d on the House side in reference to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), an annual defense policy package.&nbsp;<br>The House&nbsp;passed its version&nbsp;of the annual defense policy in July, including several conservative amendments that featured a measure to reverse the Pentagon\u2019s abortion travel policy. The Democratic-majority Senate later passed its version, which did not include several GOP-led provisions in the House version, including the abortion policy.&nbsp;<br>\u201cWe\u2019re going to conference in the Senate, we\u2019re going to work out this abortion issue that has been a tradition within the NDAA,\u201d McCaul said.<br>The House will return from recess Tuesday, setting up for a showdown between the congressional chambers.
