President Joe Biden’s approval rating hit 39% as more than two-thirds of Democrats say they want a candidate other than Biden to run for the White House in 2024, according to a poll released Thursday.
The CNN survey conducted by the polling firm SSRS also showed that five of the top seven Republican candidates would beat Biden in the general election in 2024.
Biden’s job approval rating stands at 39%, which is the second-lowest approval rating he’s had under an SSRS survey, after his 38% approval rating in the summer of 2022, when inflation was at a four-decade high.
His approval rating stands at 6% among Republicans and 36% among independents.
Even though his approval rating among Democrats remains high at 74%, more than two-thirds of Democrats, 67%, say they want a “different candidate” than Biden to be the party’s 2024 nominee.
If the 2024 election were held today, Trump would beat Biden 47% to 46%, according to the poll. Biden would also be beaten by 6% in a matchup against former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, 2% against former Vice President Mike Pence, 2% against South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott and 2% against former New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie.
The only candidates who may face difficulties if put up against Biden in the general election are the top two polling behind Trump: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who tied with Biden at 47%, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who would lose to Biden 46% to 45%.
This survey was conducted Aug. 25-31, 2023, with 1,503 U.S. adults and has a 3.5% margin of error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
