{"id":16538,"date":"2023-08-06T03:08:27","date_gmt":"2023-08-06T08:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=16538"},"modified":"2023-08-06T03:08:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T08:08:30","slug":"blinken-says-u-s-pausing-some-foreign-aid-programs-for-niger-following-military-takeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=16538","title":{"rendered":"Blinken says U.S. \u2018pausing\u2019 some foreign aid programs for Niger following military takeover"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The State Department announced Friday that it will pause some foreign aid programs in Niger after the country\u2019s democratic government was overthrown by military leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Humanitarian and food aid in the country will continue, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we have made clear since the outset of this situation, the provision of U.S. assistance to the government of Niger depends on democratic governance and respect for constitutional order,\u201d Blinken said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe remain committed to supporting the people of Niger to help them preserve their hard-earned democracy and we reiterate our call for the immediate restoration of Niger\u2019s democratically-elected government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Niger\u2019s President Mohamed Bazoum \u2014 elected in 2021 as the first democratic leader in the country\u2019s history \u2014 was removed from power and placed under arrest by military leaders last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. officials have not called the action a coup, but have demanded that Bazoum be released and given his authorities as president once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI call for President Bazoum and his family to be immediately released, and for the preservation of Niger\u2019s hard-earned democracy,\u201d President Biden said in a statement Thursday. \u201cThe Nigerien people have the right to choose their leaders. Abdourahmane Tchiani, took over the government last week following days of fighting.
