Former Vice President Mike Pence,<\/u><\/a> a 2024 GOP White House candidate, said Sunday the Department of Justice (DOJ) \u201chas lost the confidence of the American people,\u201d following the news former President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>could be indicted in an investigation into his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do think that the Department of Justice has lost the confidence of the American people,\u201d Pence told CNN\u2019s Dana Bash\u2002<\/u><\/a>on \u201cState of the Union,\u201d adding he thinks another indictment against Trump would \u201conly contribute to that sense among the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump announced last week<\/u><\/a> he received a target letter informing him he is a subject in the DOJ investigation into his efforts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pence said on CNN he hopes Trump is not indicted again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I said, I\u2019d rather that these issues and the judgment about his conduct on January 6 be left to the American people in the upcoming primaries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pence also told Bash that he has heard from Americans during his campaign stops who have a \u201cdeep concern about unequal treatment of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The target letter comes after Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel<\/u><\/a> last year to oversee the Justice Department\u2019s probe into \u201cwhether any person or entity unlawfully interfered with the transfer of power.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m elected president of the United States, we\u2019re not just going to have a new attorney general, we\u2019re going to clean house among all senior leadership at the Justice Department, and we\u2019re going to appoint men and women of integrity who will have the confidence of Americans across the political spectrum for their rule of law,\u201d Pence said Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pence previously pushed back<\/u><\/a> on Trump\u2019s suggestions that his former vice president had the ability to overturn the election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019ve said many times that the president\u2019s words were reckless, that I had no right to overturn the election,\u201d Pence said Sunday. \u201cBut while his words were reckless, based on what I know, I\u2019m not yet convinced they were criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While prosecutors have not handed over a formal indictment yet, a target letter often indicates a person could soon face charges. The letter reportedly cites three statutes involving conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy to deprive citizens the \u201cfree exercise\u201d of constitutional rights like voting.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump already faces trials over alleged hush money payments and his handling of classified documents. He is also the center of a probe in Georgia for possible election interference.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
