Sen. Tommy Tuberville<\/a> (R-Ala.) offered up a head-spinning defense of white nationalists on Monday, saying he\u2019s against racism but that many of them \u201cjust have different beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuberville, who has blocked hundreds of military promotions to protest the Pentagon\u2019s abortion policy, was asked by CNN<\/a>\u2019s Kaitlan Collins<\/a> about comments he made in May when asked about white nationalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI call them Americans<\/a>,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t back down, saying he\u2019s against racism but believes white nationalists are just Americans and that the term \u201cis just a cover word for the Democrats<\/a> now where they can use it to try to make people mad across the country, identity politics. I\u2019m totally against that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collins reminded him what the term actually means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA white nationalist is someone who believes that the white race is superior to other races,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, that\u2019s some people\u2019s opinion,\u201d Tuberville replied, and again he defined a white nationalist as \u201can American.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not an opinion; white nationalists are literally defined \u201cas one of a group of militant white people who espouse white supremacy and advocate enforced racial segregation,\u201d according to Merriam-Webster<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Tuberville said they\u2019re Americans who \u201chave different beliefs\u201d while repeating that he\u2019s \u201ctotally against racism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA white nationalist is racist, senator,\u201d Collins reminded him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, that\u2019s your opinion,\u201d Tuberville said, as he did earlier. \u201cThat\u2019s your opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuberville has a history of racist rhetoric \u2015 so much so that his own brother called him out<\/a> over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDue to recent statements by him promoting racial stereotypes, white nationalism and other various controversial topics, I feel compelled to distance myself from his ignorant, hateful rants,\u201d musician Charles Tuberville wrote on Facebook in May. \u201cI DO NOT agree with any of the vile rhetoric coming out of his mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the NAACP criticized him<\/a> for \u201cflat out racist, ignorant and utterly sickening\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
