{"id":15168,"date":"2023-07-06T05:26:21","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T10:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=15168"},"modified":"2023-07-06T05:26:26","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T10:26:26","slug":"experts-predicted-america-was-racing-towards-a-looming-hunger-cliff-they-were-right-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=15168","title":{"rendered":"Experts predicted America was racing towards a &#8220;looming hunger cliff.&#8221; They were right, data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Back in March, as expanded pandemic-era Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits expired, food insecurity experts were concerned that the United States was racing towards<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2023\/03\/04\/us-is-racing-toward-a-looming-hunger-cliff-insecurity-experts-warn\/\">\u2002a looming &#8220;hunger cliff.&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;Now, it seems that their predictions were correct, according to<a href=\"#\/\">\u2002new data from the Census Bureau<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Alliance to End Hunger wrote in a June 30 email, &#8220;26.5 million Americans reported<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2023\/06\/15\/insecurity-already-affects-12-million-us-homes%E2%80%94and-reductions-in-snap-benefits-wont-help_partner\/\">\u2002food insecurity<\/a>&nbsp;as of June 19, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"#\/\">Census Bureau&#8217;s Household Pulse Survey<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 the most thus far in 2023 and the highest number since December 2020.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Related<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2023\/03\/04\/us-is-racing-toward-a-looming-hunger-cliff-insecurity-experts-warn\/\">US is racing toward a looming &#8220;hunger cliff,&#8221; food insecurity experts warn<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, SNAP benefits were essentially supercharged as Americans faced furloughs, unemployment and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2021\/08\/15\/supply-chain-disruptions-covid-semiconductors-climate-change\/\">\u2002widespread supply chain disruptions<\/a>&nbsp;which had already thrown the grocery-buying experience into disarray. In a surge that was categorized as an &#8220;unprecedented expansion&#8221; by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/19\/us\/politics\/coronavirus-food-stamps.html\">the New York Times&#8217; Jason DeParle<\/a>, more than six million people enrolled for food stamps during the first three months of the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While SNAP benefits typically vary based on a recipient&#8217;s income, during the temporary congressional expansion, recipients were offered the maximum aid available for their household size. However, those benefits were cut months early as part of a bipartisan compromise surrounding a program to provide grocery benefits to replace school meals for low-income children.
