{"id":14981,"date":"2023-07-02T22:38:43","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T03:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14981"},"modified":"2023-07-02T22:38:47","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T03:38:47","slug":"2-people-were-killed-and-28-wounded-in-a-mass-shooting-at-a-baltimore-block-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14981","title":{"rendered":"2 people were killed and 28 wounded in a mass shooting at a Baltimore block party"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were killed and 28 others injured in a mass shooting at a Baltimore block party, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All 30 of the victims had gunshot wounds, Baltimore Police Acting Commissioner Richard Worley said in a Sunday afternoon news conference. Their ages range between 13 and 32 years old, Worley added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two people killed were identified by Baltimore police as 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzales and 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those injured, 15 were younger than 18 years old, according to Sunday night news release from police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine of those injured remained in nearby hospitals \u201cin various conditions\u201d Sunday afternoon, the commissioner added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven people were shot and two were trampled late Saturday night in Wichita, Kansas.<br>1 person in custody after 7 shot in Wichita, Kansas, nightclub shooting, police say<br>Investigators continue to scour the large crime scene \u2013 which spans multiple blocks \u2013 and officials urged anyone with information or who may have captured video footage, including from security cameras, to come forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were \u201cat least two\u201d people who opened fire during the shooting, but authorities are investigating there may have been more, Worley said. Authorities have not shared information about a potential motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll we know right now is that we had multiple (shooters) open fire on a large crowd of people who were out during the block party. We don\u2019t know if they were targeted or if (the shooters) were just shooting indiscriminately down the street,\u201d Worley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The violence marks yet another instance during which a celebration turned into a tragedy, with lives lost and others permanently altered. And it\u2019s a reminder of the deadly consequences of firearms getting into the wrong hands, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said in the Sunday afternoon news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was a reckless, cowardly act of violence that has taken two lives and altered many, many more,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cThis tragic incident is another glaring, unfortunate example of the deep issues of violence in Baltimore, in Maryland and this country and particularly gun violence and the access to illegal guns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just two days into the month, this is one of three mass shootings in July and one of 338 mass shootings in the US in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents watch as Baltimore police investigate the site of a mass shooting in the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood on July 2, 2023.<br>Residents watch as Baltimore police investigate the site of a mass shooting in the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood on July 2, 2023.<br>Nathan Howard\/Getty Images<br>Amid a celebration, gunshots rang out<br>Police received multiple calls after 12:30 a.m., and arrived to find one woman dead and multiple other people suffering from gunshot wounds, Worley said earlier Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and the 20-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a9 Mapbox \u00a9 OpenStreetMap Improve this map<br>Shooting<br>Scott said the block party was in celebration of Baltimore\u2019s Brooklyn neighborhood, which he described as a working-class neighborhood filled with immense pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an event that happens in Brooklyn every year,\u201d he told CNN\u2019s Victor Blackwell and Amara Walker. \u201cFolks were out there having a celebration and then at some point, gunshots rang out and folks of course were trying to get away, get out of there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott\u2019s office is distributing letters offering community-based services for residents in the Brooklyn Homes area, which he described as a public housing facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a neighborhood that has had its troubles, but a neighborhood that has seen some folks in that community really determined to see it be successful and see things turn around,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baltimore City Councilwoman Phylicia Porter described the area where the shooting unfolded as a marginalized community, with high unemployment and violent crime rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBrooklyn has forever and always been a neglected community. This is not the time for us to forget them now, this is the time for us to come together and stand in solidarity with them,\u201d Porter said in the afternoon news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event took place without a permit and authorities are also now investigating when police were made aware of the party and whether there were any officers present prior to the shooting, Worley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we made mistakes, we will fix them and move forward so it never happens again, but again, we did not know that this event was occurring,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We will not stop until we find you\u2019<br>Earlier, Scott said the tragedy \u201chighlights the impacts and the need to deal with the overproliferation of illegal guns on our streets and the ability for those who should not have them to get their hands on them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor also said he is mobilizing every resource available to assist the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>: Wooden crosses are placed at a memorial dedicated to the victims of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School on June 3, 2022 in Uvalde, Texas. 19 students and two teachers were killed on May 24 after an 18-year-old gunman opened fire inside the school. Wes Moore said his administration is in touch with local officials and ready to provide assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaryland has had enough of watching gun violence continue to ravage our state and our nation,\u201d Moore said in a statement. \u201cThe fact that these horrific shootings continue to take place is abominable.
