{"id":14792,"date":"2023-06-30T03:08:03","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T08:08:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14792"},"modified":"2023-06-30T03:08:14","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T08:08:14","slug":"gop-chairs-accuse-ftcs-khan-of-misleading-congress-over-ethical-failure-in-meta-probe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14792","title":{"rendered":"GOP chairs accuse FTC\u2019s Khan of \u2018misleading Congress\u2019 over \u2018ethical failure\u2019 in Meta probe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Republican chairs of two House committees accused Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/lina-khan\/\">Lina Khan\u2002<\/a>on Wednesday of misleading Congress about her decision to reject ethics advice in a case against Meta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Judiciary Chair&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/jim-jordan\/\">Jim Jordan\u2002<\/a>(R-Ohio) and House Energy and Commerce Chair&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/cathy-mcmorris-rodgers\/\">Cathy McMorris Rodgers\u2002<\/a>(R-Wash.) said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2023-06-28-jdj-cmr-to-khan-ftc-re-oversight.pdf\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;to Khan that a recent report on her decision in the Meta case raised \u201cserious questions about your commitment to the fair and impartial administration of the FTC\u2019s authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khan decided not to recuse herself from the FTC case challenging Meta\u2019s merger with a virtual reality company, despite receiving a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/documents\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/rfE9nltMFEH8\/v0\">memo<\/a>&nbsp;from the agency\u2019s ethics official last August recommending that she step back from the proceedings to \u201cavoid an appearance of partiality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, there is a reasonable appearance concern with her participation in this matter,\u201d Lorielle Pankey, the FTC\u2019s ethics official, said in the memo first reported by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-06-16\/ftc-rejected-ethics-advice-for-khan-recusal-on-meta-case\">Bloomberg<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this month. \u201cI also recognize that reasonable minds may disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pankey also noted that she did not believe Khan\u2019s participation would constitute a \u201cper se federal ethics violation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan and McMorris Rodgers specifically accused Khan of providing \u201cmisleading testimony\u201d at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing in April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked at the hearing whether there were any cases in which she did not follow the advice of the FTC\u2019s ethics official, Khan said \u201cno,\u201d explaining that she had \u201cconsulted\u201d with the official and \u201ctaken actions that are consistent with the legal statements\u201d the official had made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khan is the subject of three separate investigations by Republican-led House committees, including the Oversight, Judiciary, and Energy and Commerce panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4072736-gop-chairs-accuse-ftcs-khan-of-misleading-congress-over-ethical-failure-in-meta-probe\/\">Thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Republican chairs of two House committees accused Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair&nbsp;Lina Khan\u2002on Wednesday of misleading Congress about her decision to reject ethics advice in a case against Meta.
