Kennedy\u2002<\/a>Jr. on Wednesday said the United States\u2019 role in the Russia-Ukraine war is \u201cterrible for the Ukrainian people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have neglected many, many opportunities to settle this war peacefully,\u201d Kennedy said in a live town hall event with NewsNation, moderated by Elizabeth Vargas. \u201cI think the way that we have conducted the war is bad \u2026 is terrible for the Ukrainian people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024 presidential candidate said he doesn\u2019t know exactly what a negotiated peace would look like, or whether it would mean ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia. But he blamed decades of U.S. and NATO policy toward Ukraine and Russia for creating conditions for the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve turned that nation into a proxy war between \u2014 a pawn in a proxy war between Russia and the United States,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were told this was a humanitarian exercise. \u2026 But when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\">President Biden\u2002<\/a>was asked why are we over there, he said for regime change of [Russian President] Vladimir Putin,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early last year, Biden remarked that Putin \u201ccannot remain in power,\u201d but later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/599954-biden-says-he-was-not-calling-for-regime-change-in-russia\/\">said<\/a>&nbsp;he was not calling for a regime change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennedy also referenced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/3462190-pentagon-chief-says-us-wants-to-see-russia-weakened\/\">comments<\/a>&nbsp;from Defense Secretary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/lloyd-austin\/\">Lloyd Austin\u2002<\/a>that among the U.S.\u2019s goals in aiding Ukraine is to \u201csee Russia weakened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat is the opposite of a humanitarian mission, that is a mission about a war of attrition in which the people dying are Ukrainians,\u201d Kennedy said at the NewsNation event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NewsNation and The Hill are both owned by Nexstar Media Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4072739-rfk-jr-says-us-role-in-war-terrible-for-the-ukrainian-people\/\">Thehill<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic presidential candidate&nbsp;Robert F.
