{"id":14282,"date":"2023-06-22T03:36:43","date_gmt":"2023-06-22T08:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14282"},"modified":"2023-06-22T03:36:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T08:36:50","slug":"television-veteran-geraldo-rivera-says-hes-quitting-fox-news-political-combat-show-the-five","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14282","title":{"rendered":"Television veteran Geraldo Rivera says he\u2019s quitting Fox News\u2019 political combat show \u2018The Five\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Geraldo Rivera has quit as one of the lonely liberal voices on Fox News\u2019 popular political combat show \u201cThe Five,\u201d saying Wednesday that \u201ca growing tension that goes beyond editorial differences\u201d made it no longer worth it to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last scheduled appearance on \u201cThe Five\u201d for the television veteran, whose 80th birthday is on July 4, is next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been a rocky ride but it has also been an exhilarating adventure that spanned quite a few years,\u201d he said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday. \u201cI hope it\u2019s not my last adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera said that it was his choice to leave \u201cThe Five,\u201d but that Fox management \u201cdidn\u2019t race after me to say, \u2018Geraldo, please come back.\u2019\u201d There was no immediate comment from Fox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite airing in the late afternoon instead of prime time, \u201cThe Five\u201d has become Fox\u2019s most-watched program, with an average of more than 3 million viewers last year. Its conceit is simple \u2014 five people, four of them conservative and one liberal \u2014 kick around the issues of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg Gutfeld, Jesse Watters, Dana Perino and Jeanine Pirro are the regular conservatives. Rivera has rotated as the liberal voice with Jessica Tarlov and Harold Ford Jr., a former congressman from Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera said he planned to remain as a \u201ccorrespondent at large\u201d at Fox, with a contract that expires in January 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he\u2019d been suspended a handful of times, most recently in early May. He had tweeted shortly after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tucker-carlson-out-fox-news-58a8421c55978f223b9c4b1d1cbe50be\">Fox fired Tucker Carlson<\/a>&nbsp;on April 24 that he found Carlson\u2019s theories about the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection to be \u201cbullshit,\u201d leading Gutfeld to respond via tweet, \u201cYou\u2019re a class act Geraldo, a real man of the people.\u201d Carlson had downplayed the violence on Jan. 6, calling people who invaded the Capitol \u201csightseers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera and Gutfeld had a handful of particularly contentious exchanges. In late April, Rivera told him \u201cstop pointing at me\u201d when they argued over electric vehicles. He called Gutfeld \u201can arrogant punk\u201d on the air last year during a fight about abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera would not comment directly about Gutfeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere has been a growing tension that goes beyond editorial differences and personal annoyances and gripes,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not worth it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera, once a friend of Donald Trump who split with him over the former president\u2019s false claims of winning the 2020 election, said that \u201cunder no circumstances do I think Donald Trump should be president of the United States again and that\u2019s an important message I am committed to bringing to the American people between now and November 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although \u201cThe Five\u201d and its large viewership would seem a prominent place for him to deliver that message, he said \u201cyou can imagine the friction that role by definition\u201d would provoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m 80 years old,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want the friction. \u2018The Five\u2019 is too intimate a place and it gets too personal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The argument over electric vehicles illustrated the challenge faced the liberal voice on \u201cThe Five.\u201d As he talked, onscreen chyrons below him read \u201cBiden pushing pricey electric cars on Americans\u201d and \u201cAmericans not buying Biden\u2019s EV hype.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera had a colorful syndicated talk show that aired from 1987 to 1998, and hosted an evening news and interview show at CNBC in the late 1990s. He was brought to Fox shortly by then-chairman Roger Ailes after the September 2001 to be a war correspondent at first and has remained.
