{"id":14213,"date":"2023-06-21T04:54:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T09:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14213"},"modified":"2023-06-21T04:54:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T09:54:42","slug":"report-new-college-football-video-game-facing-lawsuit-over-player-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=14213","title":{"rendered":"REPORT: New College Football Video Game Facing Lawsuit Over Player Compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Electronic Arts (EA) has reportedly been served a lawsuit over the deals offered to players relating to a video game, according to Front Office Sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Brandr Group, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/20\/poll-the-trafalgar-group-football-fans-prefer-college-nfl\/\"><u>marketing<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and licensing agency, is suing EA over the Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) deals they have offered players,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/brandr-group-suing-ea-over-college-football-video-game\/\"><u>according to<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Front Office Sports. The Brandr Group works with 54&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/14\/mike-gundy-oklahoma-state-college-football-realignment-money\/\"><u>schools<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;across the nation on athlete&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/12\/15\/report-late-nil-payments-unkept-promises-outright-jealousy-college-basketball-ncaa-hoops-name-image-likeness\/\"><u>NIL deals<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and intellectual property. The Brandr Group alleges that EA is attempting to not abide by agreements to negotiate player compensation with the agency. These actions amount to \u201ctortious interference,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/nil\/news\/the-brandr-group-suing-ea-sports-over-college-football-video-game-group-licensing\/\"><u>according to<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency claimed that they had been in communication with EA in both 2021 and 2022 over participation in the video game. EA allegedly said in an email that deals for players affiliated with The Brandr Group schools would be done through the agency.&nbsp; EA, however, reportedly decided to partner with OneTeam Partners in May 2023, per Front Office Sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EA is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23753790\/ea-sports-college-football-players-pay-boycott\"><u>reportedly offering<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;players an \u201copt in\u201d opportunity for $500 and no royalties to use their likeness, an offer that caused the College Football Players Association to call for a boycott, the outlet noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, EA Sports is trying to avoid paying collegiate football players a fair price for their participation in the Game, continuing the pre-O\u2019Bannon pattern of large corporations taking advantage of young student-athletes and capitalizing on their NIL,\u201d the lawsuit reads, On3 NIL reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we have previously stated, our primary concern is advocating for student-athletes, ensuring they have a voice and are justly represented in all matters pertaining to the use of their name, image, and likeness,\u201d The Brandr Group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/nil\/news\/the-brandr-group-suing-ea-sports-over-college-football-video-game-group-licensing\/\"><u>told<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;ON3. \u201cWe believe that student-athletes are not receiving fair market value for their NIL rights and that the contractual rights asked for may limit other NIL gaming opportunities. We have no further comment at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/1256885-50-best-parts-of-ea-sports-ncaa-football-13-video-game\"><u>last produced<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a college football video game in 2013. EA halted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/2021\/02\/02\/ncaa-football-ea-sports-stopped-making-games\"><u>production<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the games amid a lawsuit initiated by former UCLA basketball player Ed O\u2019Bannon against the NCAA, citing antitrust violations, according to Sports Illustrated. O\u2019Bannon alleged the NCAA improperly used commercial value of the players, pointing out the video game as an example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EA sports settled with O\u2019Bannon and claimed in court filings they would be willing to compensate players going forward. The NCAA resisted the move, resulting in production of the game being halted, according to Sports Illustrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supreme Court&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/2021\/06\/21\/supreme-court-sides-with-former-athletes-ncaa-alston\"><u>ruled 9-0<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;against the NCAA in June 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/20969582-ncaa-v-alston\"><u>claiming<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;that the organization violated antitrust laws and could not place limits on athlete compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/06\/20\/college-football-video-game-facing-lawsuit\/\">Dailycaller<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Electronic Arts (EA) has reportedly been served a lawsuit over the deals offered to players relating to a video game, according to Front Office Sports.
