{"id":13888,"date":"2023-06-17T03:05:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-17T08:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=13888"},"modified":"2023-06-17T03:05:40","modified_gmt":"2023-06-17T08:05:40","slug":"take-em-down-jax-calls-on-new-city-leaders-to-move-forward-with-removal-of-confederate-monuments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=13888","title":{"rendered":"Take Em Down Jax calls on new city leaders to move forward with removal of Confederate monuments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 The organization Take Em Down Jax has continuously advocated for the removal of Confederate monuments in Jacksonville for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group stands in front of City Hall every Friday to protest and make their message clear: remove the statues they believe are symbols of hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor-elect Donna Deegan came and spoke to a protest organizer before it started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her candidacy, she said she would support the removal of the monuments, and protestors said they believe she\u2019ll get it done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have said repeatedly I would spend public money, just as our current mayor has said he would do to remove those Confederate monuments to make sure that people don\u2019t have to walk by them and be reminded of the time in our history, that quite frankly, we should be ashamed of,\u201d Deegan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe demand current administration, new administration to finish taking them down,\u201d Hope McMath said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the James Weldon Johnson Park statue was removed in 2020, the group said the monument in Springfield is next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we can do this, we can continue to do more and that\u2019s what we\u2019re asking for,\u201d Dr. Kimberly Allen with 904Ward said. \u201cThe only thing to do is to remove all symbols that represent white supremacy including the one in Springfield Park because that woman does not represent me or any of my friends that are women of the South,\u201d Allen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizers said they are confident the Deegan Administration will keep its word. They also want to revisit a cost-effective way of removing the Springfield monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor us, it\u2019s part of reparations, right?,\u201d McMath said. \u201cIt\u2019s a small investment to reverse a harm that has been in place for over 100 years in this city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pat Geer, supports the Confederate monuments and advocates for them to remain in the city to preserve history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just here as a citizen, wanting to preserve the history that I grew up in, and the corrections that were made based on what happened,\u201d Geer said. \u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s not recognized here.
