{"id":13803,"date":"2023-06-16T03:39:40","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T08:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=13803"},"modified":"2023-06-16T03:39:45","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T08:39:45","slug":"lauren-boebert-called-out-over-treatment-of-witness-an-insult-is-not-an-argument","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=13803","title":{"rendered":"Lauren Boebert called out over treatment of witness: \u2018An insult is not an argument\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Far-right&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/colorado\">Colorado&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/republican\">Republican&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/lauren-boebert\">Lauren Boebert<\/a>&nbsp;was scolded by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/maryland\">Maryland<\/a>&nbsp;Democrat&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/jamie-raskin\">Jamie Raskin<\/a>&nbsp;for her attitude towards a witness during a hearing of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/house-oversight-committee\">House Oversight Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New York University professor Sally Katzen appeared at the hearing entitled \u201cDeath by a Thousand Regulations: The Biden Administration\u2019s Campaign to Bury America in Red Tape\u201d on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawyer and legal scholar was called to the Republican-led hearing by the minority,&nbsp;<em>Newsweek&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/lauren-boebert-scolded-after-arguing-witness-during-hearing-1806755\">noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Boebert spent her time during the hearing berating Ms Katzen, interrupting her as she attempted to answer. The Colorado congresswoman asked Ms Katzen if she thought changes to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) not put forward by Congress were appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ms Katzen started to speak, Ms Boebert instead began laying out her thoughts on the matter. Ms Katzen was later interrupted again and when she attempted to respond for the third time, Ms Boebert said, \u201cNo ma\u2019am it\u2019s my time. Thank you\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh, I\u2019m sorry, so you are not interested in my views?\u201d Ms Katzen replied to which Ms Boebert once again said it was her turn to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the hearing went on, Ms Katzen appeared to stop trying to answer questions from Ms Boebert. At one point, she suggested that Ms Katzen had a \u201c$2.5 million home\u201d which appeared to be intended as criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExcuse me, I really take that as a personal &#8230; I disagree that you\u2019re casting aspersions on me,\u201d the scholar responded, at which point Ms Boebert said her time was up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After several minutes of verbal jousting, Mr Raskin asked for a moment to criticise Ms Boebert\u2019s behaviour, saying that \u201can insult is not a substitute for an argument\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe chair would advise members to adhere to the House standard of decorum and proceed in order,\u201d the chairman of the committee, Kentucky Republican James Comer of Kentucky, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett then apologized to Ms Katzen, saying that Ms Boebert\u2019s line of questioning was \u201cuncalled for\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet me do what [Ms Boebert] would never do, which is to be an adult in this room, or in this chamber,\u201d Ms Crockett said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter users also criticised Ms Boebert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTruly, I believe if Boebert and [Marjorie Taylor Greene] weren\u2019t there, things would calm down in Congress. Those two are instigators of chaos, and just plain meanness,\u201d one Twitter user&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SaintLaurant\/status\/1669034201964847135\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fact that Congressman Raskin has to battle cancer and this utter nonsense while maintaining his top-tier level of dignity is a travesty,\u201d another account holder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tr_politicaide\/status\/1669085625427828741\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/raskin.house.gov\/2022\/12\/statement-of-congressman-jamie-raskin-to-the-people-of-maryland-s-8th-district\">announcing<\/a>&nbsp;his diagnosis late last year, Mr Raskin revealed in an<a href=\"https:\/\/raskin.house.gov\/press-releases?ID=C5B584C9-6779-47DD-805E-B36DF6E52637\">&nbsp;open letter in late April<\/a>&nbsp;that his cancer was in remission with a 90 per cent chance of no relapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/lauren-boebert-jamie-raskin-oversight-b2358522.html\">independent.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Far-right&nbsp;Colorado&nbsp;Republican&nbsp;Lauren Boebert&nbsp;was scolded by&nbsp;Maryland&nbsp;Democrat&nbsp;Jamie Raskin&nbsp;for her attitude towards a witness during a hearing of the&nbsp;House Oversight Committee.
