Two children suffered “burn like injuries” after having played at a Massachusetts playground that had been doused in acid, fire officials said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police and fire officials were called to Bliss Park in Longmeadow on Sunday morning for a report of \u201ca suspicious substance\u201d on the playground equipment, the fire department said in a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the same time, fire officials were sent to a home for a report of two children with injuries after they left the park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The fire department determined that acidic material \u201chad been poured on three of the slides on the playground,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officials learned that the pump room in the basement of the park’s pool building had been broken into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The perpetrators had climbed two fences and entered the pool building through a ventilation shaft, which was found with its cover torn off, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The shaft led to a room where chemicals used to operate the pool were stored. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A hazmat team determined that muriatic acid was the chemical that was poured on the slides. Muriatic acid, which is used to clean and disinfect pools, can cause severe chemical burns, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officials said that the pool chemicals had been properly stored in a secured area and that \u201ca great deal of effort was employed to enter this space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The public is asked to call in with tips if anyone noticed suspicious activity in the park Saturday night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe suspect that the perpetrators may have suffered acid burns to their hands or arms and their clothing may have indications of being degraded from contact with the acid,\u201d the fire department said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An investigation continues into who was behind the break-in and the acid attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Massachusetts State Police crime lab gathered evidence and sent it for forensic analysis and fingerprinting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Town officials hired a contractor to clean the play space, and the fire department said all hazardous materials have been cleaned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The playground area remains fenced off \u201cout of an abundance of caution,\u201d but the rest of the park is open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
