The Arizona Republican Kari Lake\u2019s vow of armed resistance over Donald Trump\u2019s indictment for retaining classified records<\/a> \u201cthreatens the very core of our democracy\u201d, an Arizonan Democratic congressman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruben Gallego is running to replace the former Democrat Kyrsten Sinema<\/a> in the US Senate next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cI know this language isn\u2019t just hyperbole \u2013 it\u2019s dangerous and it threatens the very core of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 38-count federal indictment against Trump was unsealed<\/a> on Friday. He is due to appear in court in Florida on Tuesday. Jack Smith, the special counsel, told reporters<\/a> he would \u201cseek a speedy trial\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump was already in unprecedented legal jeopardy. He and other Republicans responded to the indictment under the Espionage Act with incendiary rhetoric<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake, a TV news anchor turned far-right firebrand, lost the election for Arizona governor last year. She continues to insist<\/a> without evidence her defeat was the result of fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to Georgia Republicans on Friday, she said<\/a>: \u201cI have a message tonight for [US attorney general] Merrick Garland, and Jack Smith, and Joe Biden. And the guys back there in the fake news media, you should listen up as well, this one\u2019s for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you want to get to President Trump, you\u2019re going to have to go through me, and you\u2019re going to have to go through 75 million Americans just like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m going to tell you, most of us are card-carrying members of the NRA [National Rifle Association]. That\u2019s not a threat \u2013 that\u2019s a public service announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will not let you lay a finger on President Trump. Frankly, now is the time to cling to our guns and our religion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake was speaking in place of Mike Pence, Trump\u2019s vice-president who escaped the mob Trump sent to the Capitol on January 6, some of whom chanted about hanging him, to preside over certification of Biden\u2019s election win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pence is now a candidate for the Republican nomination but like all others he trails Trump by large margins, as the former president ruthlessly capitalises on \u2013 and successfully monetises<\/a> \u2013 the various charges against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump faces criminal charges at state level, in New York<\/a>, over a hush money payment to the porn star Stormy Daniels, and federally, over his retention of classified records and obstruction of moves to secure their return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a New York civil trial, found liable<\/a> for sexual assault and defamation against the writer E Jean Carroll, he was ordered to pay $5m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also expected to be indicted over his election subversion, at state level in Georgia and federally in an investigation also supervised by Smith, Trump denies wrongdoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Lake\u2019s remarks in Columbus on Friday met<\/a> with a standing ovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to a reporter, Lake tweeted<\/a>: \u201cI meant what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gallego said: \u201cAs a marine who went all the way to Iraq to defend this country, our democracy, and our freedoms, I know this language isn\u2019t just hyperbole \u2013 it\u2019s dangerous and it threatens the very core of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also said Lake \u201cowes every America-loving Arizonan an apology\u201d, as the state had rejected \u201cher off-the-rails rhetoric that does nothing but sow doubt in our elections\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Lake remains an eager Trump ally, seen by some as a possible pick for vice-president. On Friday, she said she was \u201cmore than willing to fill Mike Pence\u2019s shoes\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Trump, who features on a song<\/a> splicing his voice with those of imprisoned Capitol rioters, Lake has released<\/a> a single. Its title<\/a>, 81 Million Votes My Ass, is a reference to Biden\u2019s winning total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
