{"id":13307,"date":"2023-06-09T04:36:02","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T09:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=13307"},"modified":"2023-06-09T04:36:07","modified_gmt":"2023-06-09T09:36:07","slug":"ohio-lawmakers-want-to-abolish-slavery-as-punishment-for-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=13307","title":{"rendered":"Ohio lawmakers want to abolish slavery as punishment for crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ohio lawmakers have introduced a joint resolution that would remove slavery and involuntary servitude from the state\u2019s Constitution as a punishment for crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amendment was introduced by Rep. Dontavius Jarrells, a Democrat representing Columbus, and Rep. Phil Plummer, a Republican representing Dayton. The proposed amendment was referred to the Constitutional Resolutions Committee on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Article 1, Section 6 of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/Assets\/Laws\/Constitution.pdf\"><u>Constitution of the State of Ohio<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;currently says: \u201cThere shall be no slavery in this state; nor involuntary servitude, unless for the punishment of crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawmakers are proposing the language to change to, \u201cThere shall never be slavery in this state; nor involuntary servitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jarrells told CNN that he wants to change \u201carchaic and outdated language.\u201d He added that many people he has spoken to about the bill are shocked because they don\u2019t know such language exists in the state Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want my children, when they grow up, to live in a state where the vestiges of slavery no longer exist,\u201d Jarrells said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the proposal is passed by the House and the Senate, it would need to be placed as an issue on the general election ballot. It would require a 50% majority vote plus one to pass because the measure was proposed by lawmakers, Jarrells said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While other lawmakers have tried to amend this clause before, this is the first time a measure has bipartisan support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, former Ohio State Rep. Alicia Reece&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ohiohouse.gov\/news\/democratic\/legislative-black-caucus-introduces-bill-to-remove-slavery-from-ohio-constitution-78661\"><u>introduced<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a bill to change the language and Rep. Cecil Thomas introduced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/24\/us\/slavery-ohio-legal-trnd\/index.html\"><u>another<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;joint resolution in 2020 to remove the exception for slavery and involuntary servitude from the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other states, including Colorado, have voted in recent years to amend similar exception clauses from their constitutions.
