Out of the darkness, the man himself appeared in a shard of red light to rumble through \u201cKick Ass,\u201d a rowdy rocker true to its title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song is from Adams\u2019 2022 album, \u201cSo Happy It Hurts,\u201d and confirmed that 40-plus years into his career, the Canadian hitmaker, while maybe not&nbsp;the&nbsp;savior of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll, deserves much applause for keeping its pulse racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Adams landed at Baltimore\u2019s CFG Bank Arena for the launch of the So Happy It Hurts tour, which will hit U.S. arenas through August&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/picture-gallery\/life\/2018\/09\/21\/joan-jett-feminist-rock-n-roll-icon\/1377500002\/\"><u>with Joan Jett &amp; The Blackhearts<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;serving as exceptional openers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adams, 63, and his taut four-piece band, including longtime guitarist Keith Scott and drummer Mickey Curry, began their world voyage in January 2022 with a spate of dates in Asia and Europe. The muscularity that comes with consistent performing was evident in a 100-minute, 23-song set stocked with well-worn chestnuts and a few nods to newer fare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bryan Adams reminded fans about &#8216;the great Tina Turner&#8217;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clad in a casual uniform of dark pants and sneakers, Adams roamed the open stage while playing guitar, frequently hopping down to a platform that sported microphone stands at each end to hit every segment of the arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether rolling through the joyfully swinging \u201cCan\u2019t Stop This Thing We Started\u201d or leading the crowd that filled the lower bowl and floor of the venue through fist-pumper \u201cSomebody,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2021\/11\/26\/bryan-adams-tests-positive-covid-19-while-italy\/8763707002\/\"><u>Adams proved that songs<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;he tailored for arenas decades ago still resound with a melodic punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While guitar crunchers \u201cIt\u2019s Only Love\u201d \u2013 recorded, he reminded, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/05\/24\/tina-turner-death-queen-of-rock-n-roll-dies-at-83\/70253455007\/\"><u>\u201cthe great Tina Turner\u201d<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 and \u201cThe Only Thing That Looks Good On Me is You\u201d rattled appropriately, Adams is also regarded as a bit of a ballad king, and he didn\u2019t disappoint those enamored with his softer contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlease Forgive Me\u201d and \u201cHere I Am\u201d drew modest cheers, but the indelible piano opening from Gary Breit on \u201cHeaven\u201d prompted an immediate singalong of the first verse. Yes, it\u2019s treacly. It\u2019s also sweet, meaningful and on this night, performed with impressive range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adams\u2019 catalog is unquestionably durable. Who would argue the air guitar joys of the no-frills \u201cCuts Like a Knife\u201d or \u201cRun to You?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even recent offerings, including \u201cI\u2019ve Been Looking for You\u201d from his current album and the rockabilly shaker \u201cYou Belong to Me\u201d from 2015\u2019s \u201cGet Up\u201d album, showcased his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2020\/05\/12\/bryan-adams-apologizes-expletive-ridden-coronavirus-rant\/3116307001\/\"><u>undiminished ability to fortify<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the spirit of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Joan Jett &amp; The Blackhearts debut new songs<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also keeping the beat steady was Jett and her Blackhearts, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2022\/06\/23\/motley-crue-def-leppard-poison-joan-jett-review-stadium-tour\/7701783001\/\"><u>spent last summer<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;opening for Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Poison on The Stadium Tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/music\/2018\/09\/21\/joan-jett-60th-birthday-honoring-her-rock-n-roll-icon-status\/1377677002\/\"><u>seemingly ageless Jett<\/u><\/a>, 64, and her quartet of power rockers, established an assertive vibe with a new song, \u201cShooting Into Space\u201d from the just-released&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2VSbpFbcCz8c3yQyzezYmO\"><u>\u201cMindsets\u201d EP.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though it was quickly followed by the Runaways favorite, \u201cCherry Bomb,\u201d Jett\u2019s statement that she still isn\u2019t finished creating potent four-on-the-floor rockers was duly noted. Throughout the near-hourlong performance, she and the band slammed out three other new tracks, including the ultra-catchy, guitar-centric single, \u201cIf You\u2019re Blue\u201d and, to wrap the set, the saloon singalong \u201cWhiskey Goes Good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But fans yearning to hear her crushed-gravel voice on longtime classics were sated as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A diminutive figure in all-black, including her signature shag hair, Jett slashed at her guitar during \u201cDo You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),\u201d loped through the rolling groove of \u201cFake Friends\u201d and handled a serrated solo on her sizzling cover of Sly and the Family Stone\u2019s original diversity anthem, \u201cEveryday People.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the Blackhearts is longtime manager\/producer\/right hand man Kenny Laguna, who, in addition to playing keyboards and percussion, also acted as narrator as he shared anecdotes in his deep New York accent about the origins of \u201cFake Friends\u201d (music industry hypocrites) and \u201cFresh Start\u201d (from Jett\u2019s 2018 \u201cBad Reputation\u201d documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, \u201cI Love Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll\u201d required no backstory and fans leapt to their feet to shout along with the jukebox staple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Jett wasn\u2019t going to end on an obvious note.
