Chris Christie<\/a>&nbsp;kicked off his presidential campaign Tuesday evening, promising to be the only candidate in a crowded GOP primary field willing to directly take on former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christie, who also ran for president in 2016, began his bid under the slogan \u201cBecause the truth matters\u201d with a town hall in New Hampshire, which holds the nation\u2019s first Republican primary following Iowa\u2019s leadoff caucuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump-wins-2016-gop-new-hampshire-primary-article-1.2526105\">After losing the nomination to Trump seven years ago<\/a>, the former governor and federal prosecutor went on to become a close off-and-on adviser before breaking with the former president over his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump made us smaller by dividing us even further and pitting us one against the other,\u201d Christie said, suggesting thaHe added that President Joe Biden \u201cis doing the same thing, just on the other side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christie enters a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/republican-primary-trump-desantis-pence-christie-b0a18225ec5f9d0f53aa0f08b292a2f3\">growing primary field<\/a>&nbsp;that already includes Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. Former Vice President Mike Pence will be formally launching his own campaign in Iowa on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his time as governor, Christie established a reputation as a fighter with a knack for creating viral moments of confrontation.
