{"id":12344,"date":"2023-05-25T05:52:07","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T10:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=12344"},"modified":"2023-05-25T05:52:21","modified_gmt":"2023-05-25T10:52:21","slug":"climate-scientists-flee-twitter-as-hostility-surges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=12344","title":{"rendered":"Climate scientists flee Twitter as hostility surges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Scientists suffering insults and mass spam are abandoning Twitter for alternative social networks as hostile climate-change denialism surges on the platform following Elon Musk\u2019s takeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers have documented an explosion of hate and misinformation on Twitter since the Tesla billionaire took over in October 2022, and now experts say communicating about climate science on the social network \u2013 on which many of them rely \u2013 is getting harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Policies aimed at curbing the deadly effects of climate change are accelerating, prompting a rise in what experts identify as organised resistance by opponents of climate reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Gleick, a climate and water specialist with nearly 99,000 followers, announced on May 21 he would no longer post on the platform because it was amplifying racism and sexism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he is accustomed to \u201coffensive, personal, ad hominem attacks, up to and including direct physical threats\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[But] in the past few months, since the takeover and changes at Twitter, the amount, vituperativeness, and intensity of abuse has skyrocketed,\u201d said Gleick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Rohde, a physicist and lead scientist at the non-profit environmental data analysis group Berkeley Earth, analysed activity on hundreds of accounts of widely followed specialists posting about climate science before and after the Musk takeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He found climate scientists\u2019 tweets were losing effect. The average number of likes they received was down 38 percent and average retweets fell 40 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter has not commented directly about what changes it has made to the algorithms that drive traffic and visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contacted at its email address for comment, Twitter\u2019s press department returned its now customary reply, an automated email with a \u201cpoop\u201d emoji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in a tweet seen as an acknowledgement of a deliberate change, Musk wrote in January: \u201cPeople on the right should see more \u2018left-wing\u2019 stuff and people on the left should see more \u2018right-wing\u2019 stuff. But you can just block it if you want to stay in an echo chamber.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Climate denial bots<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In another analysis, prominent climatologist Katharine Hayhoe monitored responses to a tweet on climate change that she published twice, as an experiment, on separate dates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2022\/11\/1\/elon-musk-fires-twitter-board-making-himself-sole-director\"><u>before and after Musk\u2019s takeover.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She counted the hostile comments and examined them for signs they came from bots \u2013 automated accounts that researchers say are pushing mass misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inauthentic accounts can be identified by analysis tools such as Bot Sentinel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Replies from apparent trolls or bots increased 15 to 30 times over a two-month period compared with the previous two years, Hayhoe tweeted in January 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore October, my account was growing steadily at a rate of at least several thousand new followers a month. Since then, it has not changed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Dessler, professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&amp;M University, said he was moving most of his climate communication to Substack, a newsletter platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cClimate communications on Twitter are less useful [now] given that I can see that my tweets are getting less engagement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn response to almost any tweet concerning climate change, I find my notifications inundated with replies from verified accounts making misleading or misguided claims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others have abandoned Twitter altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hayhoe said of a Twitter list of 3,000 climate scientists that she keeps, 100 disappeared&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/search\/twitter climate\"><u>after the takeover<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Much quieter\u2019<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Glaciologist Ruth Mottram had more than 10,000 followers on Twitter but she left in February and joined an alternative scientists\u2019 forum powered by Mastodon \u2013 a crowdfunded, decentralised grouping of social networks founded in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really been a revelation in many ways. It\u2019s a much quieter and more thoughtful platform,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Mastodon, \u201cI haven\u2019t had any abuse at all or even people questioning climate change. I think we\u2019d become far too used to it on Twitter\u2026 I had blocked loads of accounts over on the birdsite [Twitter]\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Mann, a prominent climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania and regular target for abuse by deniers of climate change, said he believed the rise in misinformation was \u201corganised and orchestrated\u201d by opponents of climate reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen a huge rise in trolls and bots. Many target tweets of mine for attack,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mann\u2019s 2021 book The New Climate War documented action by oil producers to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2022\/10\/20\/the-long-fight-against-climate-change-deniers\"><u>sow climate denialism on social media.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe professional trolls manipulate the online environment with strategic posts that generate conflict and division, leading to a feeding frenzy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/5\/24\/climate-scientists-flee-twitter-as-hostility-surges\">Aljazeera<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists suffering insults and mass spam are abandoning Twitter for alternative social networks as hostile climate-change denialism surges on the platform following Elon Musk\u2019s takeover.
